How the BBC Over-Egged UK Retail Sales ... And The World Soaked Up Every Word

booboocWith ‘enemies’ like these, the Coalition doesn’t need friends
By John Ward: At the UK’s Office of National Statistics site today, it says – unequivocally – ‘the average weekly spend in the retail industry in December 2013 was £8.8 billion compared with £8.5 billion in December 2012′. That’s an increase of about 4% YOY. Hurrah.
This was reported as follows at the BBC website (MY EMPHASIS: ‘UK retail sales in December were up 5.3% on a year ago – the fastest annual sales growth in more than nine years. The figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggested growth in consumer spending above the expectations of many analysts.’
This is simply wrong: the figure refers – as the ONS site makes clear -  to the quantity bought by shoppers. The spend figures further down show a much smaller rise. That yells ‘lower margins’.
Why does this matter to, say, Australians, Americans, Germans or Japanese persons? Because the mistake was unquestioningly picked up by Bloomberg, CNBC, Reuters, AussieBC and Uncle Tom Cobbleigh everywhere. The phrase ‘Growth in consumer spending’ has gone round the world….but it’s wrong. Unhurrah.
What other evidence suggests lower margins though?

Gender Feminist Huffington Post Withdraws False Allegation Against Justice 4 Men and Boys

By Followers of AVfM will need no reminding of how gender feminists have lied decade after decade in a whole range of areas, most notably with respect to their two key political weapons, rape and domestic violence. Even where they’ve been caught making demonstrably misleading statements in the media, they invariably refuse to either retract the statements or apologise. We’ve made numerous public challenges of gender feminists (and their male collaborators) and not one has ever been responded to. To say they’re utterly shameless would be an understatement. For gender feminists the ends – notably, maintaining feminist narratives – always justify the means (relentless misleading statements).
Of the public challenges we made in 2013, one was to Kat Banyard in connection with her exaggeration of the frequency with which schoolgirls experience sexual harassment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R3fMxygLXw, the other to Caroline Criado-Perez about her claim of an evidence base supporting the notion of a causal link between increasing female representation on corporate boards and enhanced financial performance: Caroline Criado-Perez is asking the media to ‘fact check’. No, seriously, she is!.
Given this backdrop, we start the year with some good news. We recently gave some coverage to a young Huffington Post contributor, Ellie Slee, who’d made a false allegation in an article, namely that J4MB refers to women asgestational incubators’.

A Brief History Of Circumcision

By Jacqueline Hooman: As you read this, you may be sitting to breakfast eating your morning Cornflakes.  But have you ever stopped to think about the man behind the cereal?  Born in 1852, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, of Cornflakes fame, was a nineteenth century puritan.  His ideals about health and hygiene are some of the most oppressive to women and men alike.  He attained his medical degree in 1875 and was hired by the Adventist Church as a Health Reformer.  Among many controversial practices, one of the most highly debated treatments recommended by Kellogg was circumcision of males. Kellogg recommended male circumcision as a cure for masturbation, impure thoughts, and sexual desires.  He is quoted as saying, A remedy which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcisionThe operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment, as it may well be in some cases.” It was important that the boys not be infantile, so as to be mature enough to understand the punishment.  His remedy for females was, “…the application of pure carbolic acid to the clitoris an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement, and preventing the recurrence of the practice in those whose will-power has become so weakened that the patient is unable to exercise entire self-control.”
