Belinda Brown: Here I discuss how low male employment opportunities lead to reduced
rates of marriage. Low rates of marriage lead to higher rates of
cohabitation which in turn increases fatherlessness and single
parenthood. This link between male unemployment and single parenthood
is the mechanism through which poverty and disadvantage are reproduced.
If we want to break these spirals of disadvantage we need to focus on
male employment.
