Confirmed: US planned to nuke the moon

RT: In a secret project recently discovered, the United States planned to blow up the moon with a nuclear bomb in the 1950s as a display of the country’s strength during the Cold War space race.
The secret project, called “A Study of Lunar Research Flights”, as well as “Project A119” was never carried out but initially intended to intimidate the Soviet Union after their launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, which demonstrated their technological power, the Daily Mail reports.
The sight of a magnificent nuclear flash from Earth was meant to terrify the Soviet Union and boost US confidence, physicist Leonard Reiffel, 85, told the Associated Press. The nuclear device would have been launched from a missile from an unknown location. It would have ignited upon impact with the moon, causing a massive explosion that was visible from Earth.
The detonation would have been the result of an atom bomb, since a hydrogen bomb was too heavy for a missile to carry the 238,000 miles to the moon.
Astronomer Carl Sagan was responsible for some of the calculations that could cause the nuclear detonation.

Anonymous hacker behind Stratfor attack faces life in prison under self serving Judge

RT: A pretrial hearing in the case against accused LulzSec hacker Jeremy Hammond this week ended with the 27-year-old Chicago man being told he could be sentenced to life in prison for compromising the computers of Stratfor.
Judge Loretta Preska told Hammond in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday that he could be sentenced to serve anywhere from 360 months-to-life if convicted on all charges relating to last year’s hack of Strategic Forecasting, or Stratfor, a global intelligence company whose servers were infiltrated by an offshoot of the hacktivist collective Anonymous.
Hammond is not likely to take the stand until next year, but so far has been imprisoned for eight months without trial. Legal proceedings in the case might soon be called into question, however, after it’s been revealed that Judge Preska’s husband was a victim of the Stratfor hack.
According to the indictment filed in March, Hammond illegally obtained credit card information stolen from Stratfor and uploaded it to a server that was unbeknownst to him maintained by the federal government. Months earlier the FBI had arrested Hector Xavier Monsegur, a New York hacker who spearheaded LulzSec under the alias “Sabu,” and relied on from thereon out to help the authorities nab other individuals affiliated with Anonymous and LulzSec. The feds say Hammond openly admitted to compromising Stratfor’s data in online chats with their informant and unsealed a three count indictment against him relating to hacking back in March.

Fiat money expansion has made the advance of statism possible through its ability to thwart the wishes of the people as the final arbiters of state spending.  The state can obtain an almost limitless amount of fiat money from its central bank.  It need not increase taxes or borrow honestly in the bond market, so it need not fear a tax revolt or high interest rates respectively.  All it needs to do is convince the central bank to buy its debt.  The state then takes control over more and more resources, squandering them on war and welfare, depriving the free market economy of its capital base.  Once the capital base has been depleted, the economy will go into a steady decline.

Treated like ‘a caged animal’: Manning breaks silence in WikiLeaks hearing

RT: The private accused of proliferating the biggest data breach in US history said he felt like a caged animal in military custody. Bradley Manning described the inhumane treatment he was subjected to in detention centers during a pretrial hearing.
The 24-year-old spoke at length about his time in custody, beginning with his arrest in Baghdad in May 2010 and subsequent transfer to Camp Arifjan in Kuwait.
Manning said that the conditions in the small, dark cell were like a “cage” and that during his incarceration there he began “to fall apart.”
Elaborating on his deteriorating mental state he said he was anxious all the time and acknowledged that he had contemplated suicide but he "didn't want to die," he just wanted to "get out of the cage."
"My nights were my days and my days were my nights. It all blended together after a couple of days," he told the court.
He said that following a course of medication his condition stabilized before he was returned to the US for processing at Quantico detention center in Virginia. The private said his elation at being back in his home country was short-lived, as upon arrival he was put on suicide watch and subjected to prolonged harsh treatment by the camp’s military personnel.
He demonstrated to the court using white tape how small his cell was in the Quantico detention center. Manning also put on the restrictive suicide smock which he was forced to wear during his 10 months in the detention center.

UN overwhelmingly votes to upgrade Palestine to ‘non-member observer state,’ will the Israeli regime retaliate?

By Madison Ruppert: The United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine to “non-member observer state” with an overwhelming 138 to 9 and 41 abstentions, giving Palestinians the right to join the International Criminal Court and other treaty bodies.

One must wonder, however, how much this will actually change on the ground in Palestine. Will it prevent neighboring countries from blocking access to Palestinian land as they have done multiple times? Will it lead to less disproportionate killing in conflicts and more clarity regarding ceasefire agreements? Will it force Hamas and other militant groups to take a less aggressive stance? All this remains to be seen.

Indeed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the vote will actually do absolutely nothing to change the situation on the ground. “This is a meaningless resolution that won’t change anything on the ground,” said Netanyahu in a statement issued by his office shortly before the UN vote was actually held, according to Reuters.

“No Palestinian state will arise without an arrangement ensuring the security of Israeli citizens,” Netanyahu stated. This did nothing to temper the celebration in the streets of Palestine in the wake of the vote.

However, it displays a quite significant change from how Western nations have treated Palestine in the past, evidenced by Israeli news outlet Haaretz remarking that “officials in Jerusalem understood that Israel was left without any Western support except for the United States, Canada and the Czech Republic.” “We lost Europe,” a senior official in the Israeli regime's Foreign Ministry said, according to Haaretz.

UN implicitly recognizes Palestinian statehood

RT: The UN General Assembly has voted to upgrade Palestinians’ diplomatic status to a “non-member observer state,” thus implicitly recognizing a Palestinian state. This comes despite strong opposition from the US and Israel.
The Palestinian bid has been upheld with 138 votes in favor, 9 against and 41 abstentions.
Addressing the General Assembly on Thursday Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the historic vote was the last chance to save the two-state solution. He also told the meeting that it “is being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine.”
In his speech Abbas mentioned Israel’s deadly assault on Gaza that took place this month and stressed that the Palestinians would accept "no less than the independence of the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital."
The Israeli regime has described Abbas’s speech, which was met with a standing ovation at the General Assembly, as “defamatory and venomous.” "The world watched a defamatory and venomous speech that was full of mendacious propaganda against the IDF (death squads) and the citizens of Israel," the Israeli PM’s office said in a statement.

Site 911: the mysterious $100 million, five-story underground facility being built near Tel Aviv

By Madison Ruppert: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reportedly plans to supervise the construction of a mysterious five-story underground facility named “Site 911” for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at an Israeli Air Force base near Tel Aviv, Israel.

While the United States’ supervision of the construction might seem strange to some, it isn’t all that surprising given the tight U.S.-Israeli relationship, especially in security matters. As insane as it sounds, even the New York Police Department has a branch in Israel.

The facility is expected to take over two years to build with costs up to $100 million (surprisingly low given that we earmarked $235 million for Israel’s Iron Dome system last year while the U.S. didn’t have a penny to spend).

According to Walter Pincus’s article for The Washington Post, Site 911 will have classrooms on Level 1, an auditorium on Level 3 along with a laboratory hidden behind shock-resistant doors.

The facility will also be shielded from non-ionizing radiation and boast what Pincus calls “very tight security,” which is likely an understatement based on Israel’s already quite remarkable security measures.

The precise purpose of Site 911 remains unclear since Pincus noted that when he asked the Pentagon and the Army Corps of Engineers, they both said that the answer could only be provided by a spokesman for the Israeli Defense Ministry.

GMO giant hires retired cops to hunt down farmers

DuPont Co, the second-largest seed country in the world, is hoping to find farmers that have purchased contracts to use their genetically modified soybean seeds but have breached the terms of agreement by illegally using the product for repeat harvests. Should farmers replant GMO seeds licensed by DuPont, they could be sued for invalidating their contracts.
“Farmers are never going to get cheap access to these genetically engineered varieties,” Charles Benbrook, a research professor at Washington State University’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources, tells Bloomberg. “The biotech industry has trumped the legitimate economic interests of the farmer again by raising the ante on intellectual property.”

Why? Simple: recall that it was Goldman Sachs who was the primary "advisor" on a decade worth of FX swaps-related deals which allowed Greece to outright lie about both its fiscal deficit and its total debt levels, and that it was a Goldman alum who became head of the same Greek debt office just before the country imploded. And certainly the ECB was involved and knew very all about the Greek behind the scenes shennanigans. And who happens to be head of the ECB? Why yet another former Goldman worker, of course. Mario Draghi.

And with yet another ex-Goldmanite taking over the BOE, any hopes of bank transparency in the UK have just been crushed as well. Creating the illusion of economic growth is easy if you can print money.  It’s a prank you can play on an entire country.  Cut the value of the currency in half and the economy’s size will appear to double.  If it doesn’t, you’re in recession (whether you know it or not).   Cavemen probably understood this concept better than America’s best economic minds.

By Wolf Richter: On September 17, the German Labor Ministry sent a draft report “on Poverty and Wealth” to the other ministries to be rubber-stamped. Only the final report, once sanctified by Chancellor Angela Merkel, would be made public. The draft was supposed to remain hidden. But it seeped to the surface almost immediately. And it was hot. Too hot.
The massive data (PDF, 535 pages) described the tough reality that many people faced in Germany—a reality that got tougher every year. For example, in 1998, the lower 50% of the population owned 4% of all private wealth, while the upper 10% owned 45%. By 2008, the lower 50% owned only 1%, but the upper 10% had increased its share to 53% (at the expense also of the in-between 40%). Other reports have painted similar pictures.
The poverty report by Germany’s statistical agency showed that the “poverty rate” in Germany has been creeping up: in 2008, it was 15.5%; in 2009 it was 15.6%, and in 2010 it was 15.8%. Particularly hard-hit were people under 65 who lived alone. Their poverty rate was 36.1%. For single-parent households, it was 37.1%. The city of Munich issued its own poverty report. By taking into account Munich’s high cost of living, it found that nearly a fifth of its residents lived in poverty.

The Grand Bargain is unraveling, and a new arrangement will take the place of the Status Quo--whether we like it or not.

Correspondent Arnold suggested that I address the fiscal cliff, so here goes.

The first step is to set aside ideological blinders and confirmation bias, i.e. only looking for data that supports our current beliefs.

The second step is to look at the foundation of everything: household income.Household income is the foundation of taxes paid, consumption (spending) and savings/investment. If household income is declining, that means the pie of money that can be divided up into taxes paid, consumption and investment is shrinking.

If taxes go up, there is less pie left for spending or investment. And since the economy ultimately depends on private-sector spending and investment, then reducing those to fund government spending means there will be less private spending and investment.

If the government spent the taxes on investments that yielded a higher return than private investments, higher taxes would not devastate the economy. But the problem is that there are no feedbacks on government spending that favor efficiency or high yields.

Government spending decisions are made solely on the basis of constituency pain:the constituencies that create the most political pain for politicos and Upper-Caste government bureaucrats get funding. Efficiency and high-yielding investments are not in the political equation at all; there is no feedback in monopolies except those that favor expansion of budgets and constituencies.

But the Treasury did say that China’s currency, the yuan, remains “significantly undervalued” and urged China to make further progress.
In its semi-annual report, it said Beijing did not meet the criteria to be called a currency manipulator, which could have sparked US trade sanctions.
Critics of China say it keeps the yuan low to keep its exports cheap.

There’s a point that no-one in the establishment will admit.
Every country with a central bank is by definition and without exception a currency manipulator.
Every country that devalues its currency to boost exports is a currency manipulator.
Every country that bails out banks is a currency manipulator.
Every central bank purchase of treasury securities, mortgage-backed securities or equities is currency manipulation.
Every central bank that inflates away treasury debt is a currency manipulator.

The silver standard did not die a natural death. It was deliberately killed. A proper search for the assassins was never carried out. There was never a post-mortem. In this paper we focus on the conspiracy as it might have unfolded between the two dates: April 9, 1865 (the day General Lee of the Confederacy surrendered at Appomattox to General Grant of the Union marking the end of the War Between the States) and January 1, 1879 (Resumption Day, when payment of the victorious Union’s currency, the greenback was resumed in gold specie ̶ but not in silver).

FAA delaying selection of cities to host drones over privacy concerns, industry still avoiding the issue

By Madison Ruppert: Citing privacy concerns, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has delayed the selection of six cities in the United States which are slated to test unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), better known as drones.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has embraced small spy drones and is set to begin new testing programs, a new drone training facility is being built, last year the Pentagon identified 110 sites from which drones can operate and the military is already sharing information captured by drones inside the United States with law enforcement.

This decision is especially surprising given that the heads of 20 of the nation’s largest aviation industry groups got together to sign a letter calling on the FAA to simply ignore the privacy issues surrounding drones.

Yet last week it was reported that the acting administrator of the FAA, Michael Huerta, sent a letter to members of the Unmanned Systems Congressional Caucus which “singled out the need to first address privacy concerns that come with increasing the use of drones in the nation’s airspace.”

Bally Hero Bradley Manning demands dismissal of his case due to inhuman punishment

Bradley Manning is expected to testify in a pretrial hearing that he has been punished illegally by being locked in solitary confinement. The whistleblower hopes that his inhumane punishment is grounds for having all charges against him dismissed.
Manning, who is accused of sending classified information to WikiLeaks, will testify in a pretrial hearing in Fort Meade, Maryland.
“Until now we’ve only heard from Bradley through his family and lawyers, so it’s going to be a real insight into his personality to hear him speak for himself for the first time,” said Jeff Paterson of the Bradley Manning Support Network.
Manning’s lawyers will maintain that his treatment in a small cell at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia was illegal and unnecessarily severe. If pretrial punishment is particularly flagrant, military judges have the right to dismiss all charges.
Manning, a 24-year-old Army private and intelligence analyst, was allegedly involved in the largest security breach in US history and was charged with 22 crimes, including violating the Espionage Act and aiding the enemy. He allegedly accessed 250,000 US diplomatic cables, 500,000 army reports, and videos of the 2007 Baghdad airstrike and the 2009 Granai airstrike, and sending them to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks for publication in 2010. He is the only suspect arrested for his involvement in the security leak.
But while awaiting trial in Quantico from July 2010 to April 2011, he was allegedly mistreated, sparking human rights concerns from Amnesty International, the United Nations and the British government. The UN referred to his treatment as cruel, inhuman and degrading. Leading law scholars and PJ Crowley, former spokesman at the US Department of State, have resigned from their positions in protest of Manning’s treatment.

Yasser Arafat’s body exhumed: Poison probe ahead of UN vote

RT: The remains of Yasser Arafat have been exhumed as experts try to ascertain what exactly the zionists used to poison the Palestinian leader. The probe comes less than a week after the ceasefire between Gaza and Israel and precedes a UN vote on Palestine’s nation status.
Traces of a radioactive substance were found of Arafat’s effects in July, adding impetus to the theory he was murdered.
The procedure began at 05:00 GMT and was carried out in the presence of French, Russian and Swiss experts to verify its validity. Scientists took samples of Arafat’s bones, which they will take back to their respective countries. There they will be analyzed for traces of radioactive material and other lethal substances.
Experts have said a full investigation into the causes of Arafat’s death could take several months.
Journalists were prohibited from attending the exhumation “because [of the] sanctity of the symbol and the sanctity of this event,”
