"Subversives": How the FBI Fought the 1960s Student Movement & Aided Reagan's Rise to Power

Investigative journalist Seth Rosenfeld's new book, "Subversives: The FBI's War on Student Radicals, and Reagan's Rise to Power," is based on more than 300,000 pages of records Rosenfeld received over three decades through five Freedom of Information lawsuits against the FBI. The book tracks how then-FBI director J. Edgar Hoover ordered his agents to investigate and then disrupt the Free Speech Movement that began in 1964 on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. The protests prevailed and helped spawn a nationwide student movement. Rosenfeld outlines in great detail how FBI records show agents used "dirty tricks to stifle dissent on the campus."

Greece may sell off islands amid privatization scheme: report + Bankrupt political class: 'Austerity = poverty, adjustment = exploitation, growth = private profit' + ZH take

The Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said this week that the country is willing to sell off its uninhabited islands as part of a plan to accelerate privatization across the country, telling French newspaper Le Monde that it is the only way to save Greece.
The prime minister was quoted that Greece would still retain national sovereignty over any islands sold to private investors, “on condition that it doesn’t pose a national security problem.”
“It would not be a case of getting rid of the isles, but of transforming unused terrain into capital that can generate revenue, for a fair price,” Samaras reportedly said.
The country possesses about 6,000 tiny islands in the Mediterranean Sea, but only about 227 are actually inhabited. Samaras reportedly said that the Greece is finally willing to let some of the uninhabited islands be used for commercial purposes, which Greek lawmakers have long resisted.

Venezuela Ramps up China Oil Exports Unsettling Washington

By John Daly: The biggest geostrategic change of the past decade overlooked by Washington policy wonks in their fixation on their self-proclaimed “war on terror” is that Latin America has been throwing off the shackles of the Monroe Doctrine.
These ignored developments may well soon refocus Washington’s attention on the Southern Hemisphere, as Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez reorients his country’s to China.
It is not an inconsiderable element of concern for the Obama administration. According to the U.S. Energy Administration, the United States total crude oil imports now average 9.033 million barrels per day, with the top five exporting countries being Canada (2.666 mbpd), Mexico (1.319 mbpd), Saudi Arabia (1.107 mbpd), with Venezuela in fourth place at 930 thousand barrels per day. Note that two of America’s top four energy importers are south of the Rio Grande.
Furthermore, Venezuela’s reserves according to OPEC now top those of Saudi Arabia, with Venezuela now estimated to have the largest conventional oil reserves and the second-largest natural gas reserves in the Western Hemisphere. Two years ago OPEC reported that of the organization’s 81.33 percent of the globe’s known oil reserves Venezuela had 24.8 percent, exceeding Saudi Arabia with 22.2
So, why is Chavez in Washington’s bad books?
Well, among other reasons, for the company he keeps, as the Russian Federation, Iran and Cuba are all allies. Note that the first two are also major oil exporters.
Worse however are the social programs that Chavez has implemented to benefit his people, which not only smack of socialism but offer an alternative to Washington’s proscriptions. Case in point - Venezuela’s health care system. A joint Cuban-Venezuelan medical program, “Barrio Adentro,” has made health care free and accessible to all Venezuelans. Founded in 2003,  Barrio Adentro expanded Venezuela’s national health care system by employing more than 30,000 Cuban medical professionals as the government equipped clinics and hospitals with advanced high technology diagnostic and surgical equipment.
Something that Americans might consider as the presidential race heats up, with Medicare on the table. Such alternatives hardly please the powers that be in Washington, but are increasingly considered in Latin America.

Liquidity Drought "Candy for cows?"- Max Keiser with Dmitry Orlov

Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the fact that we're all cows eating candy during the global liquidity drought and yet Central Bank 'farmers' can't see the ill-effects because the stock markets are at four year highs. In the second half of the show, Max Keiser talks to Dmitry Orlov about 2013: revolutionary travel advisories, economic and supply chain collapse and food stamp lines at Walmart. Source

Marc Faber On Keynesian Folly, The 'Missing' Inflation, And Bubble-Blowing

In as-comprehensive-an-explanation-as-we-have-seen of the monetary malfeasance and misunderstanding of the standard Keynesian central-banker, Gloom-Boom-Doom's Marc Faber addressed an instutional audience in the Middle East earlier this year. Faber begins by explaining his (correct) view that 'Keynesian' intervention into the free-market or capitalistic society (with fiscal and monetary measures), in order to 'smooth' the business cycle, has in fact created a more violent business cycle - as they attempt to address long-term structural problems with short-term fixes (or bubbles). His lecture expands from his insight that in 1970 not a single investment bank was public - they were all private partnerships (implicitly playing with their own money as opposed to other-people's

82-year-old nun and two others breach ‘Fort Knox of Uranium,’ stay undetected for two hours

By Madison Ruppert: In yet another case demonstrating just how farcical and laughable so-called “homeland security” really is, three anti-nuclear activists, including an 82-year-old nun, breached the highly secure Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with nothing other than bolt cutters.
To make matters even more unbelievable, the group announced their arrival from a distance of a half mile and then remained on the grounds of the nuclear complex for some two hours without being discovered.
This is no minor security breach we’re talking about, here. The Y-12 National Security Complex, which some liken to the highly secure Fort Knox, likening it to the “Fort Knox of Uranium,” is where some nuclear weapons components are manufactured.
In a somewhat hilarious side note, the official website for Y-12 highlights their “Alarm Response Training which, “prepares and trains personnel responding to civilian nuclear and radiological security alarms.”
Personally, I don’t think that a complex such as this should be consulting individuals on responding to any security alarms seeing as they can’t manage to keep out an 82-year-old nun with bolt cutters or even detect her presence (along with two others) for a whopping two hours.

South Africa boycotts ‘Made in Israel’ labeled products

The South African government has put the final seal on a measure boycotting goods produced in the illegal Israeli settlements across the occupied Palestinian territories.

The government on Wednesday confirmed that it will not import the goods produced in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem) with “Made in Israel” labeling.

Government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said the goods produced would now be labeled as originating from the “Israeli Occupied Territories.”

The measure, which has been under consideration by the South African government since May, is aimed at preventing consumers from being misled into thinking that such goods come from Israel, Manyi said.

Separately, Canada’s largest Protestant church has also approved a similar measure to boycott goods produced in the occupied West Bank.
