The Financial System Doesn't Just Enable Theft, It Is Theft

By Charles Hugh Smith: It's not just inflation that is theft.

It is painfully self-evident that our financial system doesn't just enable theft, it is theft by nature and design. If you doubt this, please follow along.

Inflation is theft, but we accept inflation because we've been persuaded it benefits us. Here's the basic story: our financial system creates new credit money (i.e. debt) in quantities that are only limited by the appetites of borrowers and the value of assets they buy with freshly borrowed money.

If this expansion of credit money exceeds the actual growth rate of the real economy, inflation results.

Since our economy is ultimately based on expanding debt in every sector (government, corporations, households), inflation is a good thing because it enables borrowers to pay back old debt with cheaper money.

For example, if J.Q. Citizen makes $50,000 a year and owes $50,000 on his fixed-rate mortgage, what happens if inflation jumps 100%? Assuming J.Q.'s wages rise along with prices, his earnings jump to $100,000 while mortgage remains at $50,000. Though prices of everything else have also doubled, the debt remains fixed, making it much easier for J.Q. to service the mortgage. Before inflation, it might have taken ten days of earnings to make enough money to pay the mortgage payment; after inflation, it only takes five days' wages to make the payment.

This apparent benefit evaporates if wages do not rise along with the price of goods and services.

With every day, the West feels more and more like a Soviet satellite

Erich Hoenecker would feel totally at home in the West today
The Slog: It’s a bit of a mixed news bag this afternoon, but what strikes one is how it really is all pointing in the same direction: people above the Law, bankers cheating, the EU lying, America’s security services intruding etc etc. Here’s a little run-through…
Over the last two years, JP Morgan has run up a staggering $7billion in malfeasance fines. Nobody went to jail, and the weasel ‘without prejudice’ approach to paying up is always the same: “JP Morgan agrees with the facts, but does not admit to any crime”. You couldn’t make it up.
Still nobody has felt Murdoch’s collar, despite the fact that tapes released last week show that he clearly perjured himself at the CM&S, and threatened ‘revenge’ on an entire police force.
Surprise, surprise – the Stafford NHS is being dissolved: so the strategy of demonisation, misrepresented facts and blurred causes has worked. What has happened today is that, when it reemerges from its cryogenic chrysalis, Stafford will have had six key services cut. The idea that this is in response to public demand is a blatant lie: last April, 50,000 people took part in a march from Stafford’s town centre to the hospital, protesting at plans to downgrade Stafford’s services.

THE MANNING CASE: lessons States never learn, and politicians don’t even think about

Why Bradley Manning is worth more than any movement we have in Britain.
The Slog: The Bradley Manning case is an interesting one, because it involves the clash of two very important principles: giving your word, and doing your duty.
Seventy years on, we salute Von Stauffenberg for paying with his life by trying to kill Hitler at the Wolfschanze with a bomb. But Stauffenberg had given an oath of allegiance to his Führer ten years earlier, so he also had to break his word – something which, to a Prussian staff officer, was unthinkable.
Those Nazi officers who turned up alive at Nuremberg in 1946 were, in the main, hanged. “But I voss only obeyink ordass” fell into the language as a standing joke about Germans. Now the American legal system is effectively saying it will bang Manning up for 130 years for doing what Von Stauffenberg did. Were another President to come along in ten years time with a strong sense of ethical foreign policy, Manning would be revered as a hero. The future makes fools of us all – even the Law.

My son won’t get fair trial in US – Snowden’s father

RT: NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden would be better off staying in Russia, because he won’t get a fair trial in the US, believes his father Lon Snowden. He may soon travel to Moscow to meet his son.
Lon Snowden backs Edward’s decision to seek political asylum in Russia, he told Rossiya 24 news channel on Wednesday. The live interview taken in the US was most likely viewed by the NSA whistleblower from his temporary refuge at a Moscow airport transit zone, as he was warned beforehand by his legal representative in Russia Anatoly Kucherena.
If Edward returned to the US for prosecution, he would not be granted the constitutional right of due process, the elder Snowden fears.
“The fact is no assurances have been made that he will be given a fair trial, that he deserves, or any citizen of this nation is given by our Constitution,” he said.
Edward Snowden’s case has taken on all the characteristics of a witch hunt, argues Lon Snowden’s attorney, Bruce Fein, who was interviewed by the channel along with his client. A number of Obama administration officials and lawmakers openly branded the former NSA contractor a traitor although he has yet to be tried on espionage charges.

Ravenous Vampire-Hounds Of Inflationary Hell

By The Mogambo Guru: Thinking back on it, I see that I was, indeed, “on the edge” of going, as I seem to routinely be these days, completely berserk about how the evil Federal Reserve is creating so irresponsibly much, so staggeringly much, so impossibly much, so disastrously much excess currency and credit that We’re Freaking Doomed (WFD) to ruination and complete bankruptcy by the unstoppable inflation in prices, crushing weight of unpayable debt and a monstrous, suffocating government.

And this always leads to the destructive action of angry, unemployed, hungry, bankrupted mobs that such a grotesque inflation in the money supply always -- always! -- produces.

As proof, ancient Egypt of the third century B.C. was finally ruined,, according to Jean Philippe Levy in his book “The Economic Life of the Ancient World,” when the government had grown “omnipresent” and had unleashed a “whole army of inspectors” to combat inflation in prices by ruthlessly enforcing horrific price controls “at all levels.”

Perhaps this is why ChartoftheDay.com had a quote from Georg Hegel, a German philosopher from the early 18th century, who said, even way back then, “What experience and history teach is this -- that people and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it," by which he obviously means that “Earthling people are stupid, greedy and corrupt when they allow irresponsible expansions of the money supply when even a cursory look at the history of their own world for the last 2,500 years – even back to the Egyptian pharaohs, for crying out loud! -- proves that this horrible result happens 100% of the time!

Lakshman Achuthan: The US Entered Recession Last Year And "Is Worse Than Japan In the 90s"

Despite Tom Keene's best efforts to appear fair-and-balanced, this brief interview on Bloomberg TV places ECRI's Lakshman Achuthan in the uncomfortable position of destroying every propagandized 'fact' that the mainstream media is entrusted with disseminating to the Pavlovian investing community. From recessions with job growth ("we believe a US recession began in 2012") to the wealth divide and from GDP revisions to job quality differentials, Achuthan warns the US is becoming Japan, "U.S. growth over the last five years is weaker than Japan during the Lost Decades." Keene's insistence that things are on-the-up (though admitting that Achuthan's call on the decline in growth was correct) is met with the rhetorical question, "you wouldn't have four years of zero-interest rate policy and quantitative easing if everything was okay."

Bank Of England Helped Reichsbank Sell Its Nazi Gold

Tyler Durden's picture We previously showed hard evidence of the Bank of England's complicit hiding of the truth about the quality of gold stored in the Fed's vaults. Soon after, the Bundesbank seemed to shift its historical stance and demand its gold be repatriated into its own vaults (and we now know the impact that has had on the paper-physical paper markets). However, in yet another one of the 'darkest episodes in central banking history' the FT reports, the Bank of England facilitated the sale of gold that was looted by the Nazis after their invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938. Of course, judging today's central bankers by this ethical (and potentially criminal) behavior of over 70 years ago is unfair but a pattern of whatever-it-takes decisions and opacity appear to be forming.

Via The FT,
The Bank of England played a vital role in one of the darkest episodes in central banking history, facilitating the sale of gold looted by the Nazis after their invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938.

According to a hitherto unpublished history of the BoE’s activities in and around the second world war, the UK’s central bank sold gold on behalf of the Reichsbank – which Germany’s central bank had seized from its Czech counterpart – after the UK government had frozen all Czech assets held in Britain following the Nazi invasion.

US Police in Concord, NH apply for armored vehicle to fight ‘Free Staters, Occupiers, Sovereign Citizens"

By Madison Ruppert: Concord, New Hampshire police may soon accept $258,000 in federal money to purchase an armored vehicle, citing the need to protect police and others from threats including the Sovereign Citizens, Free Staters and Occupy New Hampshire.”
Concord would be one of countless police departments across America that is being militarized through federal funding and programs like the 1033 program.
In Georgia alone, police acquired some $200 million worth of military-grade weaponry and equipment.
A public hearing will be held about the proposed purchase of a BearCat G3 armored vehicle on August 12. The vehicle would be paid for by a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant, according to New Hampshire Union Leader.
While the grant was filed by the Concord Police Department, the department filed it on behalf of a group of 20 local communities, the Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office and Plymouth State University, under the umbrella of the Central New Hampshire Special Operations Unit.
The grant application was unanimously approved last fall by the Concord City Council, according to Concord Police Chief John Duval, but since that time people have been raising concerns about the vehicle.
Some of those concerns are being raised by the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union (NHCLU).
After all, the application stated, “Groups such as the Sovereign Citizens, Free Staters and Occupy New Hampshire are active and present daily challenges.”
It also citedseveral homegrown clusters that are anti-government and pose problems for law enforcement agencies.”

The Truth About Bradley Manning

Stefan Molyneux breaks down the truth about the Bradley Manning trial and situation.

DON’T LOSE INTEREST IN THE GREEK SPHERE: it is being crushed by maniacs

The most beautiful country in Europe is still being crushed mercilessly by the Troika and its fat collaborators. Pay attention: we are going to be next.
The Slog: A huge hat-tip goes to the Hellenic heroes who slave 24/7 writing Keep Talking Greece – still the best-informed source about the realities of EC scorched earth nihilism in Greece – for many of the highlights that follow.
On 23rd July, Eurobarometer research recorded  that 98% of Greeks thought their economy “poor”, and 90% do not trust the government.
The next day, Germany started playing games again, threatening to delay €2.5 billion bailout tranche to Greece.
The day after that, two other gigantic turds fell from a great height onto the ordinary, innocent Greek people: having closed over a thousand schools in two years, the Troika declared that more would have to go as repayment’s were not on track. This track, by the way, stretches the breadth of the Universe: mathematically, the end of it cannot be reached. Brussels-am-Berlin knows this perfectly well. Next up, the eurozone – ever there to help hoho -  delayed the bailout tranche to Greece due to 80 teachers less than target had been dismissed.
Who can begin to explain the insanity of thinking that half-witted, hare-brained budgets are more important than the education system?

Think those are dollars in your wallet? Think again.

By Kiev, Ukraine - Here’s a question– if you’re in the Land of the Free, do you think those green pieces of paper in your wallet are dollars?
They’re not. A US dollar was defined by the Coinage Act of 1792 as 416 grains of standard silver.
No, those green pieces of paper are Federal Reserve notes. “Notes” in this case meaning liabilities to the central bank of the United States.
That makes you, me, and anyone else holding those green pieces of paper essentially creditors of the Federal Reserve, whether we signed up for it or not.
As we explored on Friday, the Fed is theoretically like any other business. On one side of its balance sheet, it has assets. On the other side, it has liabilities.
The Fed is unique, though, in that its liabilities– namely Federal Reserve Notes– are passed off as money in the Land of the Free.
And they have a legal monopoly in this money business. Just ask Bernard von NotHaus, the founder of Liberty Dollar who was labeled a domestic terrorist and convicted for minting silver coins to be used as a competing money.
Moreover, the Fed has the ability to increase its liabilities at will. Mr. Bernanke can conjure additional Federal Reserve notes out of thin air and pump them into the system.

‘Glenn Greenwald is not a journalist’ Former lead Obama auto adviser Steven Rattner

By Madison Ruppert: In statements made on MSNBC’s Morning Joe today, former lead auto advisor to Obama, Steven Rattner, said that the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwaldis not a journalist.”
Instead, claims Rattner, Greenwald, who broke the PRISM story along with several other major stories on government surveillance programs, is actually “an activist portraying himself as a journalist.”
Greenwald has been attacked many times in the media and elsewhere over his reporting on the information leaked by Edward Snowden, and there is a possibility that he might testify before the European Parliament on the issue.
The members of the panel on Monday’s Morning Joe were discussing how one might hide from the National Security Agency (NSA). Mika Brzezinski, the host of the show, stated that the story surrounding the NSA surveillance is not black-and-white, though she claims Greenwald believes it is.
“That’s exactly the point,” Rattner said. “First of all, Glenn Greenwald is not a journalist, he’s an activist portraying himself as a journalist.”
“That’s maybe another conversation than what we’re having,” he continued. “But you’re right, it’s not a black-and-white story.”

A House Divided Over NSA Spying on Americans

Ron Paul: Last week’s House debate on the Defense Appropriations bill for 2014 produced a bit more drama than usual. After hearing that House leadership would do away with the traditional “open rule” allowing for debate on any funding limitation amendment, it was surprising to see that Rep. Justin Amash’s (R-MI) amendment was allowed on the Floor. In the wake of National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden’s revelations about the extent of US government spying on American citizens, Amash’s amendment sought to remove funding in the bill for some of the NSA programs.
Had Amash’s amendment passed, it would have been a significant symbolic victory over the administration’s massive violations of our Fourth Amendment protections. But we should be careful about believing that even if it had somehow miraculously survived the Senate vote and the President’s veto, it would have resulted in any significant change in how the Intelligence Community would behave toward Americans. The US government has built the largest and most sophisticated spying apparatus in the history of the world.
The NSA has been massively increasing the size its facilities, both at its Maryland headquarters and in its newly built (and way over-budget) enormous data center in Utah. Taken together, these two facilities will be seven times larger than the Pentagon! And we know now that much of the NSA’s capacity to intercept information has been turned inward, to spy on us.

As NSA expert James Bamford wrote earlier this year about the new Utah facility:

“The heavily fortified $2 billion center should be up and running in September 2013. Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter.” It is, in some measure, the realization of the “total information awareness” program created during the first term of the Bush administration—an effort that was killed by Congress in 2003 after it caused an outcry over its potential for invading Americans’ privacy.”

Young Greek And Unemployed - A Great Depression Steals the Nation's Future

By : Outside an unmarked green metal door in the hallway of a suburban Athens high school, Tina Stratigaki waits for a job interview. It’s a Tuesday in mid-July. Stratigaki, 29, applied for the job as a social worker weeks ago and had taken an hour-long test the Friday before. Based on the list of applicants posted on the wall outside the exam, she estimates there were some 2,000 candidates for 21 open positions. This is the last interview she’s likely to get before Greece shuts down for the summer holidays. Her unemployment benefits—about €360 ($475) a month from her previous job working with disadvantaged women and children—have just run out. “I’m a little bit stressed,” she says.
Jobs of any kind are scarce in today’s Greece. Nearly six years of deep recession have swept away a quarter of the country’s gross domestic product, the kind of devastation usually seen only in times of war. In a country of 11 million people, the economy lost more than a million jobs as businesses shut their doors or shed staff. Unemployment has reached 27 percent—higher than the U.S. jobless rate during the Great Depression

Cyprus 37.5% Depositor Haircut Upgraded To 47.5% Brazilian Wax

Tyler Durden's picture Once upon a time (in April), a few weeks after reversing its initial disastrous decision to haircut all deposits (including insured ones) the Troika slammed large Cypriot depositors (read evil Russian oligarchs) with a "bail-in" template, soon coming to all insolvent European nations, that included not only a forced assignment of equity in broke Cypriot banks, but far more importantly a haircut that amounted to 37.5% of deposits over €100,000. Since then a few things have happened in Cyprus, neither of them good, i.e., an a record collapse in bank deposits despite capital controls and a record crash in the local real estate market.
The confluence of both these events meant that as bank liabilities shrank (deposits), asset fair values (home mortgages) collapsed even faster. Which, as we warned in March, would entail bigger and more aggressive deposit haircuts, and ultimately: another bailout of Cyprus (something the president floated but promptly denied upon rejection by Merkel ahead of her September elections). Today, we learn that while the inevitable next 'bailout' of Cyprus is still on the table, the deposit "haircut" just upgraded to an aggravated Brazilian wax, as the 37.5% gentle trim initially proposed was revised to 47.5%.
InCyprus reports:
The Finance Ministry and the Troika appeared to be converging on an agreement on the haircut of uninsured deposits over 100,000 euros in the Bank of Cyprus at 47.5%.

Now Obama joins the statistics benders. So we have Obamanomics, Osbornomics, Draghinomics and Troikanomics + Real life under the Obaman ‘recovery’

Roll up, roll up….every nomic’s a winner!

The Slog: Following the earlier post here this morning, voilà in the FT:
‘US economic history will be rewritten this week, as the most far-reaching methodological changes in years will add the equivalent of a country the size of Belgium to output in the world’s largest economy.
The most important change by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, to be announced on Wednesday, will be to start counting spending on research, development and copyrights as investment, and reflect pension deficits for the first time. Combined they are expected to add 3% to gross domestic product.’
Waydergo Barry! The Black Dude strikes again.
You know that part of quantum theory where there is speculation about having several realities at once? It’s arrived right here on Earth, the most insolvent planet in the known Universe, and you can create these quantum reality choices by simple having nomics. A nomic isn’t like a mnemonic (which is the essence of reality) it’s more like a sort of four-dimensional harmonica that plays a different tune depending on who’s playing it.

Gaddafi son facing ‘show trial’, ICC & Libya at loggerheads

Saif al-Islam is seen after his capture, in the custody of revolutionary fighters in Obari, Libya November 19, 2011. (Reuters)RT: Almost two years after Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed, his son is to stand trial for alleged crimes against humanity. Saif al-Islam is set for a hearing in Libya; his lawyer says he faces an “entirely unfair” show trial.
If the proceedings continue in Libya, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi will most likely be executed. Once seen as the most likely successor to his father, he has been indicted by the ICC on war crimes charges relating to the 2011 uprising. He faces charges of harming state security and insulting Libya's new flag. On top of this, Saif al-Islam is wanted by the ICC for the murder and persecution of protestors during the 2011 uprising.

He was captured by local militia in the town of Ubari in November 2011, allegedly trying to flee the country.

He’s facing a show trial, clearly, an entirely unfair trial; trial in which he’s not able to get any defense witnesses to testify on his behalf because they’ll be too terrified to testify. And at the end of that he’s going to be executed,”
his lawyer John Jones told RT, adding that  Gaddafi has been held in appalling conditions, regarding his mental state.”

35 Facts To Scare US Baby Boomers

By Michael Snyder: If you want to frighten Baby Boomers, just show them the list of statistics in this article.  The United States is headed for a retirement crisis of unprecedented magnitude, and we are woefully unprepared for it.  At this point, more than 10,000 Baby Boomers are reaching the age of 65 every single day, and this will continue to happen for almost the next 20 years.  The number of senior citizens in America is projected to more than double during the first half of this century, and some absolutely enormous financial promises have been made to them.  So will we be able to keep those promises to the hordes of American workers that are rapidly approaching retirement?  Of course not.  State and local governments are facing trillions in unfunded pension liabilities.  Medicare is facing a 38 trillion dollar shortfall over the next 75 years.  The Social Security system is facing a 134 trillion dollar shortfall over the next 75 years.

'I am private eye who spied for financiers protected by police': Pressure grows to investigate companies on secret list given to UK MPs

  • Graham Freeman was jailed for stealing confidential information for firms
  • He says publication of the names of the companies would rock the City
  • Says police are reluctant to release details of businesses
  • It would expose failure to investigate serious fraud allegations
By Robert Verkaik: A private investigator at the centre of a row over a secret list of blue-chip companies that hired  corrupt private detectives has claimed they are being protected by the police.
Graham Freeman, one of four private detectives jailed last year for stealing confidential information on behalf of big business clients, says publication of the names of the companies would rock the City and lead to high-profile prosecutions.
He claims the police and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) are also reluctant to release the details because it would expose their own failure to investigate serious fraud allegations over years.

The Exquisite Art Of Marketing To Pauperized Consumers

By Wolf Richter: While workers in the upper income categories, those who don’t have to worry about the price of toilet paper, have seen their incomes rise sharply over the years, the rest have been in a long downward spiral. To take just one measure: median household income, adjusted for inflation, has dropped 7.8% since 2000 (chart). The drop has been steeper for the lower income categories. These are the folks who do worry about the price of toilet paper. And for them, Kimberly-Clark Corp. and other tissue makers have a special strategy:
“Desheeting.”
A word that top executives of personal-care conglomerates are proudly bandying about because it speaks of their corporate spirit of relentless innovation. And it cropped up during Kimberly-Clark’s second-quarter earnings call.
CFO Mark Buthman set the scene when he extolled “organic” sales growth of a whopping 3% in the second quarter, though actual sales, at $5.267 billion, were down fractionally year over year. A continuation of a worsening trend: in 2011, sales rose 5.5%. In 2012, sales rose only 1.0%, not even keeping up with inflation – a topic that came up a lot during the earnings call. In 2013, revenues look to be even more lackadaisical.

Gold And The Endgame: Inflationary Deflation

Authored by Paul Mylchreest: Excessive monetary stimulus and low interest rates create financial bubbles. This is the biggest debt bubble in history. It is a potent deflationary force and central banks are forced into deploying increasingly aggressive (offsetting) inflationary forces. The avoidance of a typical deflationary resolution to this economic long (Kondratieff) wave is pushing the existing monetary system beyond the point of no return. The purchasing power of the developed world’s currencies will have to bear the brunt of the “adjustment”. Preparations for this by the BRICS nations, led by China, are advancing rapidly.

The end game is an inflationary/currency crisis, dislocation across credit and derivative markets, and the transition to a new monetary system. A new “basket” currency is likely to replace the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. The “Inflationary Deflation” paradox refers to the coming rise in the price of almost everything in conventional money and simultaneous fall in terms of gold.
In the last report, we analysed the negative consequences of QE on the (oh so vital) liquidity of the shadow banking system.

"Economics cannot trump mathematics" Extreme Fear Is Reasonable

fearhand1
By : It is nearly impossible to convince people that an economic collapse is likely, perhaps inevitable. It is beyond anything they have seen or can imagine. I attribute that to a normalcy bias, an inherent weakness of experiential learners. For many, accepting something that has not occurred during their time on the planet is not possible. The laws of economics and mathematics may shape history but they are not controlled by history.
The form of cataclysm and its timing is indeterminable. Political decisions continue to shape both. The madmen who are responsible for the coming disaster continue to behave as if they can manage to avoid it.  Violating Einstein’s definition of insanity, they continue to apply the same poison that caused the problem. These fools believe they can manage complexities they do not understand. We are bigger fools for providing them the authority to indulge their hubris and wreak such damage.

THE NUMBERS RACKET: Hypocrisy, lies and statistics

Don’t look for consistency and truth in Government
The Slog: Jeremy Hunt loves and encourages whistleblowers, but William Hague disapproves of them mightily. This is because they have different aims: Mr Shunt is trying to get his mates into a privatised NHS bonanza, whereas Mr Hague is trying to get his member as far up the American backside as he can. This must be a major split in the senior Conservative ranks, surely? Er, no: Mr Punt disapproves of the Wikileaks whistleblower Bradley Manning, and on this they are in full agreement.
So, um, what is Tory policy on whistleblowers? Public Sector good, State bad? Right-ho, just so we’re clear on this point.
But hang on, hasn’t David Cameron said many times he does “not want to associate with tax avoiders” whereas Jeremy Fruntbottom is, of course, a chap who avails himself of this practice at every opportunity? So surely the Prime Minister must do his duty and fire the Health Secretary? Don’t hold your breath. Cameron is not in a position to fire Mr Blunt: he is a protected species.
Dave himself of course refuses to fire his own protected species, George Unborn. This despite the fact that respected observers now accept Wee Georgie’s Deflatathon method of showing the economy is growing is tosh: the RPI version suggests we’re in a depression; which, of course, we are.

Goldman CEO on risk: The worst 'absolutely will happen'

By Katie Holliday: Investors should always prepare for the most extreme risk scenario because it will happen, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein told the Australian Institute of Company Directors at a breakfast briefing on Friday.
Blankfein, who's been Goldman CEO since 2006, steered it through the fallout of the global financial crisis of 2007-2008. He said the experience had taught him to accept that the worst thing you can imagine will inevitably happen.
"Most risk management is really just advanced contingency planning and disciplining yourself to realize that, given enough time, very low probability events not only can happen, but they absolutely will happen," said Blankfein.
"The definition of infinity is that you wait long enough, everything happens."

Hundreds Killed In Overnight Cairo "Massacre" As 30 Million Take To The Streets

Tyler Durden's picture Nearly a month after the Egyptian military coup (that wasn't a coup according to the US), the celebrations over the democratic overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood's president Morsi (according to John Kerry) continue with hundreds of protesters killed and injured in the latest overnight violent breakout. The reports are obviously conflicting with the Muslim Brotherhood claiming 120 were killed in violent protests with police near Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque, describing events as a "massacre", alternatively the government's Ministry of Health says only 38 dead arrived at hospitals so far. The tragic deaths were a logical outcome of protests which according to the head of Egypt's Central Statistics Bureau General Abu Bahar Jundi, saw as many as 35 million people taking to the streets Friday on both sides of the ideological divide. Egyptian army officials put the number at around 30 million.

My Great Big Fat Greek Deputy Prime Ministerial Blob

Three-lunches Venizelos now has two offices. In the streets of Athens, his fellow citizens rummage in the garbage. But Brussels approves of him.
The Slog: When things finally start returning to normal in Greece (life without Brussels-am-Berlin bullies, corrupt politicians, having enough to eat etc) the first bloke likely to have his neck stretched or enjoy a little rueful decapitation will be Evangelos Venizelos, the man who even stole another’s surname to sell himself to the highest bidder.
The only problem in carrying out this lenient sentence will be finding a long enough piece of ship’s rope to stand the weight as the trapdoor opens, or a guillotine deep enough to travel all the way through his 500 centimetre neck. Or indeed, finding his neck in the first place.
Verrizealous has become the personification of spineless Greek elite resistance to the Mad Sprouts, as he is winched and wedged from one limo to another, surrounded by Blackwater guards, dark clouds of Lagardelist, and the whiff of continuous emissions from his anus. But now, his bloated ego (still trying desperately to catch up with his belly) has made more demands to go with his Nick Cleggolopoulus-style non-job as Deputy Prime Minister.

“carte blanche.”: Who Are We at War With? That’s Classified

By Cora Currier: In a major national security speech this spring, President Obama said again and again that the U.S. is at war with “Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and their associated forces.”
So who exactly are those associated forces? It’s a secret.

At a hearing in May, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., asked the Defense Department to provide him with a current list of Al Qaeda affiliates.
The Pentagon responded – but Levin’s office told ProPublica they aren’t allowed to share it. Kathleen Long, a spokeswoman for Levin, would say only that the department’s “answer included the information requested.”
A Pentagon spokesman told ProPublica that revealing such a list could cause “serious damage to national security.”
“Because elements that might be considered ‘associated forces’ can build credibility by being listed as such by the United States, we have classified the list,” said the spokesman, Lt. Col. Jim Gregory. “We cannot afford to inflate these organizations that rely on violent extremist ideology to strengthen their ranks.”
It’s not an abstract question: U.S. drone strikes and other actions frequently target “associated forces,”
