Institutionalised Misandry: Sexism vs. Sexism vs. The Costa Prize
Foz Meadows: Sometimes, there just isn't enough facepalm in the world.
Writing in this week's Telegraph, journalist and author Amanda Craig elected to comment on the fact that, for the first time in its 41-year history, the shortlist for the Costa Prize consists entirely of works by female authors, pointing out that while the quality of women's writing is great enough that this development shouldn't shock us, it nonetheless stands in sharp contrast to the overwhelming male dominance of the literary scene. The statistics she cites in support of this claim are stark enough -- and, indeed, well-circulated enough by this point, thanks to all the recent focus on VIDA's yearly analysis of reviewing trends -- for her observations to constitute a reasonable assessment of what is objectively understood to be a legitimate concern; at the very least, the idea that Craig's assertions could be construed as either revolutionary or even slightly vitriolic is ludicrous, given the scope of the existing debate.
And yet, in what can only be described as a collective display of unabashed misogyny, the article's comment thread is dominated by men who, in accordance with the laws of cognitive dissonance, have seemingly opted to debunk Craig's point by engaging in exactly the sort of unthinking sexism that, in actuality, proves her right.

Two Spaniards Self-Immolate Due To Financial Problems
Submitted by Tyler Durden: First it was a German, then an Italian,
and now, two months, later, the European self-immolation wave has
spread to the country that many expect will be the next one to follow
Greece into effective debt default. El Pais reports that
an impoverished 57-year-old man who set himself on fire in Málaga
Thursday, and subsequently died of his injuries at Carlos Haya hospital.
He had third-degree burns on 80 percent of his body and suffered a
multi-organ failure. The victim, thought to be of Moroccan origin, had
worked in construction for years but was out of a job now, said people
who knew him. In the last few months he had been scraping a living with
the small change he made guiding cars into parking spaces near the
hospital, an illegal practice that is usually overlooked by authorities.
The police, who have not yet located his relatives, are not ruling out
the possibility of an accident just as the man was lighting up a
cigarette. Just two minutes before the event, he bought a pack of
cigarettes from a local newsstand whose owner asked him how he was
doing.
“I don’t even have enough money for food,” he replied. The man is
thought to have been homeless at the present time, and seemed even more
depressed than on other occasions, said the stand owner.Several taxi drivers came to the rescue with their vehicles’ fire extinguishers when they saw the man go up in flames on a side street from the hospital. A few hours after being admitted into the emergency room there, he was transferred to a specialized burn unit in Seville, where doctors were unable to save his life.
He was the unlucky one
Pakistan commission covers up truth about Bin Laden hunt
Head of the commission has now submitted a 400 page report to the country's Prime Minister. However, the government has not yet decided to make the report public. Irrespective of the commission's findings, majority of the people in Pakistan know that the US raid was nothing but a cover up.
Second Perverted Trooper Suspended Over Roadside Cavity Grope
No narcotics, contraband found during searches, lawsuit says
By Frank Heinz and Ken Kalthoff: The second of two Texas State troopers at the center of a lawsuit involving a roadside cavity search has been suspended with pay. The two women from Irving are suing Trooper David Farrell, Trooper Kelley Helleson and the director of the Department of Public Safety for what they call an unconstitutional search without probable cause.
On Thursday, the DPS said Farrell had been suspended with pay effective Dec. 21 pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident. Helleson had also been suspended with pay
Bluefin tuna sells for record £1 million
A bluefin tuna has sold for a record 155.4 million yen (£1.09 million) at a Tokyo auction – nearly three times the previous high set last year.
The record sale comes as environmentalists warn that stocks of the majestic,
speedy fish are being depleted worldwide amid strong demand for sushi.
In the year's first auction at Tokyo's sprawling Tsukiji fish market, the
489-pound tuna caught off northeastern Japan sold for the record price, said
Ryoji Yagi, a market official.
The fish's tender pink and red meat is prized for sushi and sashimi. The best
slices of fatty bluefin – called "o-toro" – can sell for
2,000 yen (£14) per piece at upmarket Tokyo sushi bars.
But with a single mouthful-sized piece of sashimi weighing around 1oz, the record breaking tuna is worth around £139 per bite.

How Fiat Currency Leads To 'Collective Corruption' - Thorsten Polleit
Submitted by Tyler Durden: Ex-Barclays chief 'Austrian' economist Thorsten Polleit provides a few clarifying thoughts on the hyperinflatory endgame (and democracy-crushing impact) of the fiat currency environment. Critically, Polleit notes that fiat currency tends to result in "collective corruption" in societies, and how this then leads to hyperinflation,
despite the dangers to society that hyperinflation always brings. Ring
some bells? This brief interview (with more detailed article below)
stretches from the development of the global fiat currency regimes over
the last 40 years to the increasing levels of debt that may (just as
Kyle Bass and others have noted) mark the terminal decline of the fiat
regime and the self-serving majority electing themselves into a vicious
circle. Mises noted:
Must watch."The masses... do not conceive any ideas, sound or unsound. They only choose between the ideologies developed by the intellectual leaders of mankind. But their choice is final and determines the course of events. If they prefer bad doctrines, nothing can prevent disaster." If these "uncommon men" become "court intellectuals," the door will be opened for effectively spreading of false theories, supporting government-friendly ideas."
Star Trek: Engineer petitions White House to build Enterprise
RT: A human colony in space could become a reality if an engineer gets a
positive response from the White House for his petition to study the
possibility of building the USS Enterprise.
The proposal to the White House's official "We the People" website needs the support of 25, 000 signatures for the government to initiate a response. January 21 is the cut-off date for the proposal which asks the Obama administration to request “NASA to do a feasibility study and conceptual design of the Gen1 USS Enterprise interplanetary spaceship.”
The proposal was initiated by an engineer, AKA BTE Dan, who showcased plans for constructing an operational Enterprise on his website last year.
The engineer says a ship like the one featured on Star Trek is needed to “take the first humans to Mars while taking along a large load of base-building equipment for constructing the first permanent base there.”
BTE Dan’s website provides a more detailed plan for the “Enterprise”, a spaceship capable of reaching “Mars within 90 days of leaving earth's orbit.” BTE Dan explains this could be achieved by using three “ion propulsion engines” powered by “nuclear reactors”
