I’ve also been to places in Africa and the South Pacific where you’re greeted upon arrival by dancing tribespeople singing songs of welcome.
It’s not quite the same in the Land of the Free. In fact, before they even let people in the country, they program us to be afraid and intimidated.
For one thing, all the immigration officers are armed. There’s absolutely no reason for a government agent to carry a loaded pistol when all he does is stamp a passport. This is EXTREMELY uncommon in the rest of the world. Only in the Land of the Free.
Just like the airport security farce, which has millions of travelers assume the “I surrender” pose inside a radiation machine, US immigration checkpoints are there to train people to be afraid and submit to the state’s authority.

1) We are hard-wired to think short-term, not long-term
2) We also seem to be hard-wired to confirm to the herd mentality
A particularly intriguing experiment used by Montier to illustrate these points relates to our tendency towards ‘anchoring’.
In his words, anchoring is “our tendency to grab hold of irrelevant and often subliminal inputs in the face of uncertainty.”

2. Is the number of physicians in London higher or lower than this number?
3. What is your best guess as to the number of physicians in London?
The idea of this experiment is to see whether respondents are influenced by their phone number while estimating the number of doctors in London. The results of the experiment can be seen below:

Jack O'Sullivan: The past week has again highlighted the inexplicable absence of an intelligent discussion conducted by men about ourselves. It's followed a familiar pattern: a leading female commentator – Diane Abbott on this occasion – diagnoses male ailments and prescribes her cures. What comes back from the patient? Silence. Can there be any group that is subject to so much debate and accusation, and is so apparently powerful – yet remains so utterly speechless?It reminds me of a stereotypical scene: a woman challenging a man on some personal or domestic issue; him sitting before her silently, absorbing, stonewalling and eventually walking away. It's a dissatisfying experience for both. She complains to her friends. He has no one to talk to. Somewhere here are clues to this bewildering male silence on the public stage about our own condition.
Men's absence from the debate has dramatic consequences, making it overwhelmingly negative. In recent weeks the focus has been on abuse of teenage girls, porn, male unemployment and misogyny. But next month it could be "deadbeat dads", domestic violence and harassment in the workplace.
A debate about men defined by women inevitably dwells on what's wrong with men – on a continuing "crisis". That's understandable. There are many worrying issues that a male discussion of masculinity would and should confront. We are, after all, fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, lovers, colleagues and friends of women. But which man wants to join a debate loaded with negativity, littered with slogans like "all men are rapists"?

Europe's Quantitative Easing

Submitted by Mark J. Grant: Most people do not think that Europe engages in Quantitative Easing. They know that the United States engages in it, that Britain engages in it and now that Japan engages in it but they think that Europe has so far refused to be involved. They think this because this is what they have been told. Unfortunately this is inaccurate.

The European Quantitative Easing takes place every day just not in the manner utilized by America and others. However, it takes place all the same and it is done in a manner to circumvent the rules of the European Union. This is also why the ECB has such a massive balance sheet.


What Europe has done is gotten around their own regulations which forbid the ECB from lending money directly to nations. This is supposed to be handled by the ESM and approved by the various parliaments. Since this is either politically impossible in some countries or politically a nightmare in others the ECB has concocted a scheme to bypass the political rules with all of Europe’s politicians blinking and nodding in silent agreement.

Andy: Kim Dotcom has announced that he is the inventor of the so-called two-step authentication system and has a patent to prove it. The Megaupload founder says the security mechanism, which has just been introduced by Twitter, is being used by U.S. companies more than a billion times every week without permission. Dotcom says he doesn’t want to sue, but might if the likes of Google and Facebook don’t help fund his legal battle with the U.S. Government.
While the United States Government paints Kim Dotcom as some kind of international super criminal, the Megaupload founder sees himself rather differently.
Continually over the past year and half, and particularly since his January 2012 arrest in New Zealand, the German-born entrepreneur has described himself as an innovator, someone who creates rather than destroys as the U.S. would have people believe.

Jailed Pussy Riot Member Starts Hunger Strike

By RJ Cubarrubia: Jailed Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina has started a hunger strike to protest having been denied access to her own parole hearing. The 24-year-old Russian artist was scheduled for a hearing today, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, she was not allowed to attend. In response, she barred her attorney from attending in her stead. "I'm declaring a hunger strike and order my defense lawyers not to take part in this court trial," Alyokhina said.

Alyokhina argued that the regional court in Berizniki was only across the road to the penal colony in the Urals, where she's been imprisoned since she and two bandmates were sentenced to two years in prison last year after they were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religous hatred for staging a "punk prayer" protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral.

U.S. Drone Killers Butchered Four Americans Without Charge Or Trial - Admitted!

By Madison Ruppert: For the first time, the Obama administration has formally and publicly acknowledged that the United States has killed four American citizens without charge or trial in drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan.
Last year Attorney General Eric Holder gave a speech saying that secret executive branch reviews of classified evidence count as due process and a Justice Department whitepaper revealed that the government believes they can kill Americans without clear evidence.
However, this is the first time the government has explicitly admitted to carrying out the targeted killing of Anwar al-Awlaki and his 16-year-old son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki along with Samir Khan in Yemen and Jude Mohammad, who was killed in Pakistan. Previously they maintained that the mere existence of the program was too secret to confirm or deny.

Greek Prostitution Soars By 150% As Youth Unempoyment Hits 75%

By Tyler Durden: With Greece suffering the biggest economic depression in decades, all so a few rich men can preserve their wealth and not have their EUR-denominated savings wiped out (even if the alternative means finally being able to rebalance externally using the Drachma instead of forcing internal rebalancing via unemployment and plunging wages), it was only a matter of time before we found out just how humiliating the conversion of the entire economy to a "gray", non-tax paying one would be for the citizens of Greece.

As the NYT reports, in just the past two years, the numbers of Greeks engaging in prostitution as a last course source of income has more than doubled: according to the National Center for Social Research, the number of people selling sex has surged 150 percent in the last two years.
Furthermore, with every business in which there is exploding "competition" and rich client scarcity, it is not just any prostitution, but very deflationary prostitution:

“Five euros only, just 5 euros,” whispered Maria, a young prostitute with sunken cheeks and bedraggled hair, as she pitched herself forward from the shadows of a graffiti-riddled alley in central Athens on a recent weeknight.

Many prostitutes have been selling their services for as little as 10 to 15 euros, a price that has shrunk along with the income of clients afflicted by the crisis. Many more prostitutes are taking greater health risks by having unprotected sex, which sells for a premium.
