Wow. This story about Iceland’s “recovery” is a complete lie.
By Simon Black: Reykjavik, Iceland - Without doubt, Iceland was the canary in the coalmine for the
sovereign debt crisis that is unfolding across the world right now.
It was the first place to go bust, crumbling under the weight of a credit-fueled boom that brought down most of the country’s banking sector and sent the currency into freefall.
Banks either went bust or got nationalized. And investors around the world suddenly woke up to a sobering reality of a major default… something that had been considered preposterous only months earlier.
The situation got so bad that the British government (whose taxpayers had much to lose from Iceland bank defaults) used their anti-terrorism legislation to seize Icelandic bank assets in the UK!
It was a spectacular collapse. And the first of many. Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, etc. were soon to follow.
Yet unlike the bankrupt countries of southern Europe, Iceland dealt with its economic emergency in a completely different way.

DETROIT, USA TODAY, LEEDS, UK TOMORROW: Where neoliberalism is going
The Slog: I do find it fascinating that, now Detroit has finally defaulted,
with other local administrations surely soon to follow, it doesn’t seem
to occur to most American commentators that this is the beginning of the
end for their country. If you move jobs offshore, then degradation,
drugs and crime immigrate very quickly to replace them.
There are, of course, a thousand reasons why Detroit is broke, and
the American Right is scribbling so much about it – in a hurry to blame
the Democrat administration for everything – you could be forgiven for
imagining their wrists might actually be engaged in a rather different
activity. But at base level, the simple fact is that one President and
Congress after another – starting with Reagan himself, easily the worst
offender – carried on the myth of reducing the State when actually they
were increasing the cost of it but delivering less to the Citizen. The
cost increase was at least partly a result of borrowing money while
pretending that America was still top of the heap (and so it was OK to
strip out its home-grown assets to vultures like Romney) when in reality
its traditionally global moneymakers were not moving forward at all.

25 Facts About The Fall Of Detroit That Will Leave You Shaking Your Head
By Michael Snyder: It
is so sad to watch one of America's greatest cities die a horrible
death. Once upon a time, the city of Detroit was a teeming metropolis
of 1.8 million people and it had the highest per capita income in the
United States. Now it is a rotting, decaying hellhole of about 700,000
people that the rest of the world makes jokes about. On Thursday, we
learned that the decision had been made for the city of Detroit to
formally file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. It was going to be the largest
municipal bankruptcy in the history of the United States by far, but on
Friday it was stopped at least temporarily by an Ingham County judge.
She ruled that Detroit's bankruptcy filing violates the Michigan Constitution
because it would result in reduced pension payments for retired
workers. She also stated that Detroit's bankruptcy filing was "also not honoring the (United States) president, who took (Detroit’s auto companies) out of bankruptcy",
and she ordered that a copy of her judgment be sent to Barack Obama.
How "honoring the president" has anything to do with the bankruptcy of
Detroit is a bit of a mystery, but what that judge has done is ensured
that there will be months of legal wrangling ahead over Detroit's money
woes.
Gold: Physical Demand Vs Paper Supply
Submitted by Tyler Durden: From the huge demand for physical gold from Asia to repatriation demands, and from the draining of COMEX gold inventories to the excess supply of paper gold, there is an increasing 'gap' between the perceived 'price' of gold and the cost to get one's hands on the precious metal. Santiago Capital's Brent Johnson provides a brief but complete summary of the various conundra (which we have described in detail)
occurring currently in the manipulated metals market. Perhaps the most
telling phrase comes towards the end when Johnson notes, "I don't know how to say 'Hunt Brothers' in Mandarin, but it might not be a bad idea to learn."
