It’s thought that the practice of exchanging wedding rings extends far back into ancient history, with evidence of the ritual being found in Ancient Egypt, Rome, and within several religious cultures. However our modern-day practice of giving wedding rings has a very different origin and meaning, one which may make you, well, cringe a little. As suggested on the Society of Phineas blog, the ring functions as a feudalistic contract between the man and his wife:

By Paul Craig Roberts: The several days of organized protests in Ukraine are notable for the relative lack of police violence. Unlike in the US, Canada, Thailand, Greece, and Spain, peaceful protesters have not been beaten, tear gassed, water cannoned, and tasered by Ukrainian police. Unlike in Egypt, Palestine, and Bahrain, Ukrainian protesters have not been fired upon with live ammunition. The restraint of the Ukrainian government and police in the face of provocations has been remarkable. Apparently, Ukrainian police have not been militarized by US Homeland Security.

What are the Ukrainian protests about? On the surface, the protests don’t make sense. The Ukrainian government made the correct decision to stay out of the EU. Ukraine’s economic interests lie with Russia, not with the EU. This is completely obvious.
The EU wants Ukraine to join so that Ukraine can be looted, like Latvia, Greece, Spain, Italy, Ireland, and Portugal. The situation is so bad in Greece, for example, that the World Health Organization reports that some Greeks are infecting themselves with HIV in order to receive the 700 euro monthly benefit for the HIV-infected.
The US wants Ukraine to join so it can become a location for more of Washington’s missile bases against Russia.

The digital currency Bitcoin promises all these things. And while it's far from achieving any of them -- its value is unstable and it's rarely used -- some have high hopes. 

"There will be alternatives to the dollar, and this might be one of them," said former U.S. congressman Ron Paul. If people start using bitcoins en masse, "it'll go down in history as the destroyer of the dollar," Paul added.

It's unlikely that Bitcoin would replace the dollar or other government-controlled currencies. But it could serve as a kind of universal alternative currency that is accepted everywhere around the globe. Concerned about the dollar's inflation? Just move your cash to bitcoins and use them to pay your bills instead. Tired of hefty credit card fees? Bitcoin allows transactions that bypass banks.

Even economists who embrace the power of central banks, like University of Michigan professor Miles Kimball, recognize the currency's potential.

Video That Led To Aaron Swartz’s Arrest Released

RT: Several minutes of surveillance camera footage used to identify, then arrest and indict late computer prodigy Aaron Swartz has surfaced due to a Freedom of Information Act request.
The eleven minutes of raw video was captured by a hidden camera posted in the corner of an electrical closet at MIT in January 2011 and shows Swartz — a then-24-year-old programmer and activist who years earlier helped code the popular website Reddit — swapping a new hard drive into a hidden laptop that he connected to the school’s network in an attempt to download millions of scholarly articles from the academic website JSTOR.
Authorities relied on the footage to narrow in on Swartz days later and ultimately charge him with computer crimes, the likes of which could have cost him as much as 35 years in prison and a million dollars in fines if he had been convicted. His case was months away from going to a jury trial this past January when he hung himself in his New York City apartment and died at the age of 26. Federal charges were dropped shortly thereafter.
