Iran Frees Americans as Sanctions Are Lifted, Frustrating Warmongers Around the World

By Dan Sanchez (ANTIMEDIA): Iran has freed four dual-nationality prisoners, including an American/Iranian pastor and an American/Iranian Washington Post reporter who had been accused of working for the U.S. to foment regime change in Iran. The release was part of a prisoner swap, in which seven Iranians imprisoned in the U.S. over sanction violations were also freed. A fifth American was freed by Iran outside of the swap. 
Within hours of the release, devastating international sanctions on Iran were lifted after international inspectors verified its compliance with the terms of last year’s nuclear deal between Iran and Western powers.
Taken together, the prisoner swap, Iran’s compliance with its nuclear-deal commitments, and the sanction relief mark what may be a historic thaw in relations between the U.S. and Iran. This, however, should not be exaggerated, as the U.S. continues many belligerent policies directed at Iran, especially in the realm of proxy warfare (see below).

What Young Women Really Want Are Marriageable Young Men

By Belinda Brown: On Wednesday I was on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour discussing a recent report produced by the Young Woman’s Trust (YWT). When I covered this report previously the survey findings were not available. Now that they are, a close look at them suggests that the report is an exercise in spin.

The report repeatedly states that young women feel traditionally male roles are out of their reach. The question they were asked was “Which of these jobs do you think are best suited to young women and young men”. Their responses were more gendered than those of the older female respondents, suggesting  that younger women are able to recognise that men and women are different. Perhaps feminists are losing their grip.
It is suggested more young women are economically inactive because of a lack of genuine equality of opportunity. But young men seem to have had more difficulties when it comes to work. 34 per cent are actively looking for work compared to young women’s more modest 25 per cent. While women may worry about confidence and appearance (women tend to across all surveys regardless of age) men are the ones worrying about safety at work. Men are more likely to have been shouted at by a manager or to have been formally disciplined, to have missed out on a promotion and they are marginally more likely to have been unable to get a job since leaving school.

Simon Danczuk, Labour MP for Rochdale, has been suspended from the Labour Party for sending ‘lewd text messages’ to a 17-year-old. Danczuk had been flirting with the young woman, Sophena Houlihan, on social media and via text; he was caught out when Houlihan went public with the messages, some of which read like the outpourings of a teenage boy: ‘You want me to spank you?’; ‘God I’m horny!’.
Danczuk’s texts are unbearably embarrassing, and as the MP himself later tweeted, ‘There’s no fool like an old fool’. But there is also a problem with the reaction to Danczuk’s texts and his seeming taste for young women. His exchange with Houlihan has been investigated by the police to check the teenager wasn’t ‘harassed’ by his messages, and Danczuk has been temporarily booted out of Labour. The police decided that no crime had been committed, yet Danczuk still suffered both publicly and in relation to his political work. He’s been branded a pervert by his first ex-wife and dumped by his new young girlfriend – via Twitter.
One key fact has been ignored by those rushing to investigate or condemn Danczuk – the woman he ‘sexted’ was over the age of consent.

By David Palumbo-Liu: In his celebrated essay “The Wall and the Books,” the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges recounts that the Chinese emperor who ordered the construction of the Great Wall was also responsible for destroying books. For Borges, the acts are signs of the emperor’s desire to wall off China from the outside world and from ideas. Borges goes so far as to say that these two acts are common to all despots, writing, “Burning books and building fortifications are common tasks of emperors.”

In the last week of 2015, Israel’s Minister of Education Naftali Bennett acted in a similar imperial manner. He suggested the permanent annexation of the West Bank, and he barred a book from being taught in Israeli schools. Both acts have caused an international uproar.

On Dec. 28, Bennett declared to the Knesset’s pro-settler Land of Israel Caucus, “The time has come to say Israel is ours … To go from strategic defense to a process of initiating the implementation of Israeli sovereignty over the territories under Israeli control in Judea and Samaria.” That this control is illegal by international law seems not a matter of concern. The Land of Israel Caucus has recently been pushing for an easing of restrictions on settlement building in the West Bank.
