I wanted to show love to my city and install a bit more pride in the people of Birmingham - we know the media tends to influence people outside the Midlands to look at us and our accent in a certain way but I think the majority of Brummies are proud of where they are from. I think it will also inspire people to look at their own city/town in a different way...if a Brummy can be proud, why can't they!? "Synikall"

By Paul Elam: Years back, in another life, I presented at seminars and conferences that provided continuing education units for professional re-certification. In one particular module, I used a portable grease board in a room in front of my waiting audience. Without introducing myself or saying anything else, I used a grease pen to write the words “Men are…” at the top of the board, and then silently invited the audience to finish the sentence.
Almost invariably, “pigs” or “dogs” was the first offering, accompanied by a room full of good-natured chuckles. I would nod my head and write it down on the board and return to the audience, still silent, for more.
“Controlling,” says one. “Afraid of commitment,” says another. “Aggressive.” “Macho“ “Afraid of intimacy.” “Violent.” “Sexist,” and “Power hungry.” More of the pejoratives, and almost only pejoratives, would come from the audience till the board was full.
I then flipped the board to the other side. “Women are…” was the cue, and the answers were even more rapid fire than they were with men. “Strong.” “Capable” “Empowered” “Sensitive.” “Nurturing,” and the like would fly from the audience to the grease board like a barrage of arrows, till that side too was full.

By Mike Buchanan, J4MB: Suicide has for many years been the leading cause of death of males between the ages of 15 and 49, but the government fails to recognize it as a highly gendered issue. £1.5 million is being spent on five studies into suicide, none of which are charged with investigating male suicide specifically. All too often health ministers speak of suicide only in mental health terms, in effect victim blaming.
We covered the issue of suicide in our 2015 general election manifesto (pp. 46-8). The male:female suicide differential more than doubled between 1983 and 2013, from 1.7:1 to 3.5:1, mainly as a result of a major fall in the female suicide rate.

US Equal Rights Amendment: Acquiring Equal Rights For Men And Boys

By David Ault: The notion that men need equal rights with women is almost as politically incorrect today as it was in 1978, when I began actively working in Virginia for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Even today, the ERA is often referred to as the “women’s rights amendment.” This limited interpretation is difficult to understand given its wording: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, I distributed pamphlets that explained why women deserve to have equal rights with men. As Vice Chair of the Virginia Equal Rights Amendment Ratification Council, I often passed out our organization’s pamphlet entitled Women of Virginia, Rights You Are Denied.
We did not have a corresponding pamphlet Men of Virginia, Rights You Are Denied. In fact, men’s rights were so excluded from the ERA ratification process that, despite repeated requests by several knowledgeable men, no men were invited to testify on men’s equal rights issues before the U.S. Congressional hearings on ERA ratification.
Harris and Gallup polls informed us then that nearly 60 percent of all Americans favored ERA ratification. Although men were ignored as potential beneficiaries of a ratified ERA, younger men favored the ERA at nearly the same percentage as women. Many older men also supported it.
