On November 7, 2013 at 4:20 in the morning (local time) the riot police have stormed the headquarters of the Greek public TV and radio in Athens, a building that was taken over οn June 11, 2013 by the workers and operated in a self-organised way when all 2.656 of them were left jobless in just one day.

A lot of people that gathered outside the building in solidarity were attacked with asphyxiating gas at 6 in the morning by government riot squads.

Greek police storm defunct broadcaster office

UK BANNED Press TV: Police in Greece have stormed the headquarters of the country’s now-defunct public broadcaster the ERT, evicting the employees who had occupied the building since June.

Police raided the ERT office in Agia Paraskevi, a suburb in the north of the capital, Athens, on Thursday, firing tear gas at the protesters outside the building to disperse them and gain entry.

The former employees of the state broadcaster had occupied the building since the Greek government shut down the ERT and dismissed its 2,600 staff in June.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras announced the closure of the ERT in an effort to keep Greece’s foreign creditors satisfied that the country had been fulfilling its debt restructuring and bailout commitments.

Athens defended the ERT shutdown, saying the broadcaster had become an unproductive organization that cost up to 300 million euros (406 million dollars) annually.

ERT security guard Nikos Kounoupis said, “They (police forces) started jumping in from the metal gates from the sides. They also broke the door of the side entrance. They started running inside.”

Reports said police arrested several people, including Panagiotis Kalfagiannis, the head of the ERT employees’ union Pospert, along with the union representative Nikos Tsimbidas.

“I don’t know how many people were inside the building, at night we just have people looking after the equipment,” said Machi Nikolara, a representative for ERT journalists.

Greece has relied on international rescue loans for economic survival since 2010. Athens has promised its international creditors it will cut 4,000 state jobs and put 25,000 civil servants on a redeployment scheme by the end of 2013.
