Chase Has Begun a Covert War on Bitcoin

By Michael Krieger: The past several days have seen considerable weakness in the price of bitcoin. The selling was sparked by the revelation that the Chinese government had essentially instructed its financial system to avoid it. Then yesterday it was revealed that China had banned third-party payment companies from doing business with bitcoin exchanges. As far as price is concerned, I have stated repeatedly via Twitter that I think the China news caps the upside in the near-term (baring other material news of course) and that we are in a new range of $650-$1050 per BTC. At roughly $700 where we are now, I think at least 75% of the “China premium” is now out of the price. This sets up a solid risk/reward profile. However, there is one thing in the U.S. that people should be aware of and represents some headline risk if true.
Recently, a friend of mine noted that Chase has threatened to shutdown his business account due to his use of Coinbase (remember Coinbase recently received the largest VC investment in Bitcoin to-date). Apparently, the problem hasn’t been when money moves out of U.S. banking deposits and into the Bitcoin ecosystem, but rather when the currency is converted back to dollars and then deposited back into the Chase accounts. With this already being in my mind, I read the following Reddit post this morning:

By John Ward: Boris Johnson became London Mayor on 4th May 2008. But during the election (on April 15th that year) he revealed that the City’s best-known banker would help him set up and run the multimillion pound Mayor’s Fund, to give money to some of the poorest Londoners. Mr Johnson told an audience, “The Mayor’s Fund for London will be a streamlined vehicle for getting money from the wealth creating sector to communities across London that are facing hardship and deprivation, and are the victims of crime. Many people in the City of London are very interested in this idea and one man who’s going to help is Bob Diamond at Barclays Bank, but there are many others who are going to come forward in the next few weeks who are going to show their support.”

Mr Diamond is now – like most of Boris’s friends – in disgrace. The Mayor’s Fund is still in being, but out of a London child population of slightly over two million, the number of kids benefitting from the scheme is 2,000. That’s 0.1%…and 25% of the Capital’s kids live in poverty.

Given the potential magnitude of the threat posed by this disaster, it would seem there is an agenda to redirect the world’s attention. It is difficult to know precisely what is occurring now at the Fukushima reactor site. Certainly clean-up efforts are underway – equipment and technicians and workers are working – but how far the long-term damage to the world will reach, in lives, lifestyles and financial costs, as well as geography, is a matter of conjecture. The Japanese government’s new fascist whistle-blower law may ultimately ensure that the entire body of truth never comes out, an outcome which will no doubt benefit bureaucrats and corporate officials alike.
