'Stop spying on people!': Syrian Cypherpunks Hack Skype

RT: Syrian computer hacker conglomerate, the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), has kicked off the New Year with a number of cyber-attacks, compromising Skype’s Twitter, Facebook accounts, and its official blog.
Social media accounts belonging to Skype, Microsoft’s voice-over-IP service, were hacked around 19:30 GMT. SEA posted on Skype's Twitter account a rogue message saying "Stop spying on people! via Syrian Electronic Army." The hacker group also urged people not to use Microsoft accounts because the company is “selling the data to the governments.”
SEA later re-tweeted the message using its own twitter page.

Top wish for 2014: a “true equality” movement.  In 2013, there was a fair amount of attention to men’s rights groups—which often raise legitimate issues but have a regrettable tendency to mirror the gender antagonism, hyperbole, and victim mentality of radical feminism.  But, with men’s issues on the table, perhaps the next year will see more calls for a balanced approach that promotes fairness and goodwill toward both sexes.  That would make a good, if optimistic, New Year’s resolution.

That would also be a crock of shit.

By Tim Parker: 2014 isn’t off to a good start for two of the world’s favorite apps. Reports have emerged that Skype and Snapchat were hacked.
First Snapchat. The company has confirmed that the popular photo messaging app was hacked and the perpetrators posted a database containing the user names and phone numbers of 4.6 million accounts.
On New Year’s Eve, a website called SnapchatDB.info went online and offered for download the database of the usernames and phone numbers of Snapchat accounts. The good news is that the last two digits of the phone numbers were blacked out.
The site said, “This database contains username and phone number pairs of a vast majority of the Snapchat users. This information was acquired through the recently patched Snapchat exploit and is being shared with the public to raise awareness on the issue.”

In his alternative to the Queen’s Christmas speech, Edward Snowden made the point that a person born in the 21st century will never experience privacy. For new generations the word privacy will refer to something mythical, like a unicorn.

Snapchat Is Far From Anonymous: 4.6 Million Users Have Personal Info Released

By End the Lie: Snapchat, which was thought to be a private messaging app for the iPhone, exposed some 4.6 million users after hackers released a database with apparent Snapchat usernames and partial phone numbers.
The exploit that enabled the usernames and phone numbers to be released was reportedly brought to the Snapchat company months ago to no avail.
On Christmas Day, ZDNet reported that Gibson Security, the group of hackers that discovered the exploit, notified Snapchat of the problem in August.
Gibson Security published a security advisory the same month after Snapchat did not respond or take action.
The exploit could have been fixed by “ten lines of code” and would have never appeared “if they followed best practices and focused on security (which they should be, considering the use cases of the app),” Gibson Security said.
In its Christmas release, Gibson Security also alleged that Snapchat’s statements to investors and the press are entirely false.
Two days after the Gibson Security release, the company downplayed the hack and said they “recently added additional counter-measures and continue to make improvements to combat spam and abuse.”
Yet the database, known as SnapchatDB, was still published publicly
