By Author Douglas Galbi: Today, pervasive codes of conduct explicitly prohibit “offensive communication.” Medieval Europe, in contrast, allowed much greater freedom of expression, especially in Latin. Medieval authors such as the eminent medieval church official Poggio Bracciolini explored lascivious topics fundamental to human well-being and to perpetuating humanity. This freedom of expression helped to sustain a more humane, tolerant, and culturally vibrant society. A learned man told Poggio a story about a whore who ridiculed Venetian cuckolds by claiming that they had enormous penises. This whore was welcoming and inclusive in providing her important service to men: The whore was, he said, a commonly known Venetian to whom men of diverse nations came. { Scortum erat, ait, Venetiis vulgare, ad quod cum diversarum gentium viri accederent } [1] The whore’s embrace of diversity gained for her valued knowledge: Someone asked her one day the nationality of the men who had the largest penises that she had seen.
By Eva Barb: On November 9, 2017 The New York Times published the voices of five women accusing comedian Louis C.K. of sexual misconduct, to which C.K. replied in confirmation of the allegations that he masturbated in front of these women and apologized for causing them harm. Consequently, C.K. was dropped by his manager and television network, and a variety of his projects were cancelled, including the New York premiere of his 35mm, black and white film, I Love You, Daddy. Amidst a barrage of sexual misconduct allegations against men in popular culture, C.K. has been wrung through the feminist-frenzied echo chamber that is mainstream media, resulting in the loss of a prolific and talented stand-up comedian, writer, producer and director. As a fan of C.K., the allegations against him were disheartening, not because I thought him gross or abusive, but because they meant, for all intents and purposes, the end of his contemporary career. Perhaps C.K.’s downfall feels like justice to the women he made feel uncomfortable or to anyone who is now disgusted by him, but, I imagine, his downfall was heartbreaking to a great deal of people because he is one of a handful of comedians whose work—in all its existential and self-deprecating nuances—challenges society’s normalization of the mutually exclusive ideal that men are predators and women are prey.
Authored by Darius Shahtahmasebi:Though some have been warning about the catastrophic potential for a third global conflict for years, it wasn’t until recently that these warnings became more mainstream. The calamitous nature of the violence in Syria - which has one nuclear power defending a government that has been the target of a regime change operation led by the world’s superpower - combined with 2017’s threats of “fire and fury” against another state intently pursuing a nuclear weapons supply of its own, has pushed the issue of a third world war directly into the public discourse.
While certain hotspots throughout the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe (i.e. Ukraine) have seen some notable escalations in the last few years, a direct conflict between Russia and the United States is still yet to emerge. That’s because the idea of a third world war in today’s world is completely insane. If the two countries that currently possess the world’s greatest supplies of nuclear weapons go to war, there may not be a world left for the victors to inhabit after the war is done, thereby making it an unthinkable proposal. Then again, the U.S. did just recently bomb a significant number of Russian-linked forces in Syria, reportedly killing scores of them. The targets of these air strikes were also predominantly Iranian-backed militias (just in case there weren’t enough state actors already involved in this ongoing conflict).
By Alex Witoslawski: Since gay marriage was legalized in 2015 the American public has seen that the slippery slope from legal gay marriage to trannies in girls locker roomsto troubled children given hormone blockers is real. And Americans aren’t too happy about it: as Alyssa Rosenberg lamented in the Washington Post, the number of Americans who express discomfort around LGBT people has risen for the first time since 2014. In light of this, it’s worth looking back at how this slippery slope began and how gay marriage was legalized in the first place. An interesting perspective on this subject can be found in an article published in 2014 by Tikkun Magazine titled “How Jews Brought America to the Tipping Point on Marriage Equality” which details how “Jewish activists gathered enough force to help push the state-by-state dominoes over to legalizing same-sex marriage” and how “Jews can claim a fair share of the credit for bringing Americans to a tipping point of accepting marriage equality.” This may sound like a shocking anti-Semitic accusation to some, especially to those Evangelical Christians who seem to think Jews are God’s Chosen People™ who can do no wrong, but this article was written by a Jewish activist in a Jewish magazine.

Achilles, bathed in tears, stood before him {Chiron} as before a father;
so he would have wept for Peleus {his biological father} if he were dying.
Often he caressed the feeble hands with his own loving hands;
The character that the teacher had molded rewarded him.
Achilles often kissed him and often said to him as he lay there:
“Live, I pray, don’t leave me, dear father!” { stabat, ut ante patrem, lacrimis perfusus Achilles
sic flendus Peleus, si moreretur, erat
saepe manus aegras manibus fingebat amicis
morum, quos fecit, praemia doctor
oscula saepe dedit, dixit quoque saepe iacenti
“Vive, precor, nec me, care, relinque, pater!” } [1]
By Author Douglas Galbi: Achilles’ biological parents Thetis and Peleus had a tense relationship. The top gods had arranged for their marriage. Thetis was a sea-goddess. Peleus was a mortal king. She resented her husband’s lowly status as merely a mortal. When he embraced her, he felt as if she transformed herself into a lioness or a serpent. They somehow managed to have seven children. Thetis burned some of their children to death and killed others with boiling water.[2]
