By : SWEDEN. VÄSTRA GÖTALAND. The
County Council, the policy making assembly of Västra Götaland, voted
yesterday upon a motion that would further reinforce the legality of
genital mutilation of boys (circumcision).
Jonas Andersson of the Sweden Democrats argued in front of the assembly that the alteration of children’s genitals without a proper medical reason is a violation of children’s human rights and that it stands to reason that young boy’s human rights ought to also be respected in Västra Götaland and in Sweden at large.
Nevertheless, the motion was passed with an overwhelming vote, showing once again the backwardness of the political establishment in terms of the evolving understanding of the world.
The motion passed with 131 votes “For”, no abstentions and 14 votes “against”.
