In the last couple of years, we have to deal with the possibility of drone attacks in America, the threat of SOPA and PIPA-type legislation, the increasingly frequent use of the Espionage Act, a crumbling economy, an incompetent Congress, the wiretapping of cell phones and so many other issues of concern.
Even if Bradley Manning broke military law, America needed the Wikileaks files. We the people need to see what is transpiring at the governmental and military levels.
Obama promised transparency but it seems as though we are getting the opposite and that is unacceptable.
If transparency really existed, why would people like Bradley Manning need to leak military and governmental files? If there was transparency, then most of that knowledge would already be made available to the public as they would be better informed on national matters.
Instead, we are getting mainstream news outlets that are only providing “safe” news to the masses. According to Manning’s leaked March 12th court audio by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, Manning had tried to give the Wikileaks documents to The New York Times and The Washington Post but both never really pursued him further.
Being top news outlets, you would think The New York Times and The Washington Post would want to see where this kid was going but there was never even a serious attempt. And even if there had been more curiosity, would either of these two publish the documents in their unedited forms knowing that Washington would be looming down their backs if they tried?
Editor’s note: keep in mind that The Washington Post and The New York Times have both held back information at the request of the government.
With that in mind, why does Washington need news outlets to be less than they once were?
Have you noticed, or at least heard, that journalism isn’t as hard hitting as it used to be on the mainstream level? Why does Washington need to impose fear on news outlets by threatening those willing to release vital information with charges under the Espionage Act?
Before President Obama came into office in January of 2009, only three people in the past 92 years had been accused of violating the Espionage Act. In the four years since his administration has been in place, seven people have been accused of violating the Espionage Act.
That may not seem like a lot to some but before you know it, the American government will start accusing bloggers and journalists of “espionage” when they see information that they don’t like.
Bradley Manning is being accused of “aiding the enemy” but who is the enemy? The American people are the enemy.
The American government wants to keep the masses at bay by not keeping them informed and having most news outlets that most people listen to or read “safe” news. Safe news will not make Americans realize the true danger of the matters at hand.
If there wasn’t an outcry on drones then Eric Holder, attorney general of the United States, wouldn’t have been pushed to answer Rand Paul’s question on the issue of whether or not the President could kill an American citizen outside of an emergency situation. The media can still be effective if it actually pushes back against our government.
Does the government really want to wake the “sleeping giant” that is the American people? The war for control can’t be won by the government if we are all informed about what is really going on and opposing it to the fullest extent. But if the public is kept in the dark, then the government can continue their efforts to further control the masses under the veil of secrecy.
