Saturday Night Live, for our readers outside of North America, is a venerable comedy skit show on the National Broadcasting Company in the United States. It was once highly culturally relevant here, although these days almost everyone agrees the show is pretty lackluster anymore. Anyway, this weekend they made fun of the Men’s Rights Movement, and just… wow. Not even one good zinger in the whole plodding skit. Good lord, if they were gonna make fun of us, do you think they could have come at least close to the broad side of the barn?
I could write a funnier parody of us all by myself–in fact, I’m pretty sure I already have, and more than once, actually.
That skit was about as funny as a skit showing Barack Obama eating watermelons and tap dancing. Or Sarah Palin raping children.
Here’s a tip to the current crew of SNL writers: To do real satire, you’ve got to come close to showing you at least somewhat understand, and at least on some level have some small bit of sympathy for the person or people you’re mocking; a recognition that they’re human, that you may not like them but you do recognize they are human beings and not animals. Otherwise it just doesn’t work.
In the meantime, let’s hope one of these days the SNL crew decides to learn something about what they’re mocking it before trying to mock it. Oh, and be sure to subscribe to Victor Zen. He assures me personally that, if you do, he will not torture any kittens for at least one whole week! –DE
