This week’s video looks at an important issue – domestic violence allegations and immigration fraud.
I have some amazing stories for this two part series – starting this week with an extraordinary tale from Victorian businessman Malcolm Henke. Malcolm is one of the rare lucky ones to actually win this type of battle. He was recently awarded $100,000 in costs after a year-long series of court cases following DV allegations made by his new Indian wife in order to obtain a permanent visa.
I’m very grateful to Malcolm for being willing to speak out about what happened to him. Please help me circulate his story – here.
Now for a few news items:
Maddy Ward is at it again. The main organiser of the Sydney University protest against me was named in The Australian today as leading heckling against Gabi Stricker-Phelps, daughter of the new federal MP Kerryn Phelps, at a meeting of the Student Representative Council. Stricker-Phelps is standing for a women’s officer position, which could just put Ms Ward out of her $12,000-a-year position on the SRC so it is no wonder Ward was at the forefront of the latest noisy protest. Not that Stricker-Phelps proposes any radical shift in policy if she is elected. She promises to work on important policies like establishing “a MeToo movement for the university.”
The Australian described the event as follows: “Ms Stricker-Phelps had to stop her speech as the crowd became unruly and the room was urged to ‘calm down’ before there was a ‘serious risk of physical altercation’. That all sounds remarkably familiar, doesn’t it? We noticed that the SRC meeting had to be cancelled and students evacuated after a fire alarm went off.
My Macquarie Uni event is going ahead this week. (Wed, Nov 7 at 6.00 pm. 10 Hadenfeld Ave – Y3A T1 Theatre).
The student newspaper has just published an article suggesting my talk will jeopardise the safety and well-being of students. It’s interesting that they explain that the low rape statistics from the AHRC survey were due to victims under-reporting – this is despite the million dollar survey deliberately ensuring all answers were totally anonymous, which was intended to eliminate this problem.
Finally, I was shocked to hear Sky News had fired Ross Cameron from The Outsiders’ Programme following his ill-considered remarks regarding Chinese people visiting Disneyland. If you didn’t see the context of his remarks and only read the sneering reporting of his alleged racism, I suggest you look the whole dialogue, as reported by Andrew Bolt in his weekly Blog. As Bolt pointed out, Cameron was actually mocking racist stereotypes although his words clearly didn’t come out in the way he intended.
The real point is neither Ross Cameron nor Rowan Dean are professional media people – they are very much learning on the job. And Sky News must bear some responsibility for pushing these inexperienced presenters into a nightly 11pm show – which they both strenuously tried to resist. It’s hardly surprising this type of problem arose, given the exhausting time-slot, and lack of proper support.
That’s it for now. Cheers, Tina
