DALLAS — A nearly 7-year-old African elephant has died following a 12-day battle with a viral infection, the Dallas Zoo announced Tuesday. The elephant, Ajabu, died Monday evening of elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV). Ajabu had previously faced the infection in March 2021 and survived, the zoo added. EEHV is carried by elephants both living in the wild and in human care, the zoo said, and it's believed nearly all elephants are either born with the infection or exposed to it shortly after birth. The zoo found Ajavy's slightly elevated EEHV viral load through that testing on April 27. He didn't show any physical signs or symptoms of EEHV but the team began immediate, aggressive treatment to stem the virus' progression. "Despite the round-the-clock care and heroic efforts of his animal care and veterinary teams over the last 12 days, along with support from zoo teams across the country, Ajabu laid down in the barn on the evening of Monday, May 8 and simply could not fight any longer," the zoo said in a statement.

It was 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2016 – the Zoo was just waking up and keepers were filing in, when two elephant keepers shook the barn with squeals of joy as they discovered a little grey bouncing baby boy. Just hours before, elephant Mlilo had delivered a 175-pound, 3-foot-tall calf to our somewhat surprise.
The baby, already standing, nursing and totally unfazed, would be the first African elephant calf born in a U.S. AZA-accredited Zoo in more than two years.
The keepers quickly executed their, “Surprise! A baby’s been born!” procedures to ensure the vet and animal care teams were immediately aware of the newborn.

Fort Worth, Dallas Zoos Plan to Vaccinate Animals Against COVID-19

Nakili, an eastern black rhinoceros who for decades lived at Brookfield Zoo, was humanely euthanized Wednesday due to worsening degenerative kidney disease. The 33-year-old pachyderm was the oldest male eastern black rhino living in an accredited North American zoo and arrived at Brookfield in 1994 when he was 4 years old, Chicago Zoological Society officials said. In August, Nakili was diagnosed with kidney disease, and further testing revealed his condition was progressive and nonreversible, officials said. Animal care and veterinary staff changed his diet and administered medications to ease his symptoms. During a recent checkup Nakili’s blood tests revealed that the disease had progressed to a point that supportive care was no longer feasible, and the decision was made to euthanize him before his comfort and quality of life began declining, officials said.

Veterinarians are first vaccinating those species that are known to be more susceptible to contracting the virus. The novel COVID-19 vaccine, which is designed specifically for animals, was donated by the Michigan-based animal health company Zoetis.

Twelve-year-old Masai giraffe Emara was found dead in the African Savannah yard early Friday morning, the Calgary Zoo confirmed. The veterinary team doesn’t know what caused her death, the zoo said in a news release Friday. A sloth at the Cape May County Park and Zoo suddenly died last week, zoo officials said in a social media post Friday. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Linne’s Two-Toed Sloth, Matilda,” the Facebook post read. “‘Tilly’ was an ambassador for her species and passed away suddenly last week from an illness known as Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus or GDV.” The Linne two-toed sloth is a species of sloth from South America. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus is a life-threatening condition that can cause food and gas to significantly dilate and expand the stomach. It is typically seen in dogs.

Squirrel monkey Dazzle dies following pregnancy complications at Tucson zoo

The Reid Park Zoo in Tucson announced Wednesday the death of one of its two squirrel monkeys, which reportedly died due to complications during pregnancy. Zoo officials said the monkey, named Dazzle, went into labor overnight Monday with zookeepers keeping a direct watch on her labor, monitoring contractions. They said that initially, it appeared to be a normal labor. But over time, Dazzle began showing signs of distress. Emergency care was then needed, which was provided by the Reid Park Zoo veterinary team. An ultrasound determined Dazzle’s baby did not have a heartbeat. An emergency cesarean section was done on the monkey which was initially successful, but Dazzle was unable to make a full recovery and died Tuesday, the zoo said.

5 Meerkats Die Within Days Of Each Other at Philadelphia Zoo

In the space of a month, meerkats - Nkosi, Lula, Nya, Kgala, and Ari - all became extremely ill and died at Philadelphia Zoo. The five siblings were brought to the US from Africa in 2013. "Before the team could intervene Nkosi passed. Despite best and almost heroic efforts by the veterinary and keeper teams, Lula, Nya, Kgala passed away shortly thereafter, and Ari, the remaining meerkat, died earlier this week" - Amy Shearer, Chief Experience Officer at Philadelphia Zoo. The zoo is awaiting necropsy results to determine the cause of death. However, officials have identified a possible culprit. Shearer told CBS News that, “we suspect that they may have accidentally consumed something toxic...” Referring to an agricultural dye known as Nyanzol-D she said, “we have used this animal dye for over 30 years.” This dye is used to mark and differentiate animals - It was used on the meerkats on June 1 for one of them to be dead 30 minutes later. The four others then shortly after began showing signs of unwellness, which urged veterinary staff to pump their stomachs. Shearer said they're working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Dept. of Agriculture to come to a conclusion.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – We are saddened to share that two older longtime residents of our Zoo have passed away in the last week. This monitoring helped our animal care team determine that euthanasia was the most compassionate choice for 21-year-old Wonton and 21-year-old Saga. Wonton started taking seizure medication in December 2021 after his animal care team noticed abnormal neurologic signs that started with overgrooming himself and progressed to generalized seizures. While this medication makes it harder for the body to have a seizure, it doesn’t cure the underlying cause of the seizures. Recently, his keepers saw a resurgence of those seizures.

Lemur in Topeka Zoo passes away

Topeka (KSNT) — Cleo, a 16-year-old black-and-white ruffed female lemur at the Topeka Zoo, died following complications over the weekend, the Zoo announced on its Facebook page today. “Cleo was a smart and sassy lemur who stole the hearts of many,” Animal Curator Wrylie Guffey said in the Facebook post. “She will be sorely missed,” The Topeka Zoo and Conservatory said Cleo started experiencing seizures on Saturday, June 24. After vet staff took Cleo to the hospital, an examination found the lemur’s liver values were abnormal, and X-rays also showed that there were signs of potential infection in her lungs. While Cleo’s condition improved at first following treatment, she got worse over the next few days, leading the Zoo to make the “difficult yet humane decision” to euthanize her. A necropsy showed tumors in and on Cleo’s liver, as well as nodules in her lungs. The Topeka Zoo says it will learn more about what the necropsy means after further testing.

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Zoo has announced that one of their long-term residents has passed away. The Topeka Zoo said via social media that Chockey, a golden eagle and resident of the zoo since 2004, died. The zoo estimates that Chockey was around 21-years-old upon his death. No cause of death was listed.

A sea lion named the “loudest” in a California aquarium after going viral on TikTok has died, officials said. The “goofy” and “gentle” creature died on June 29 at the age of 17, Aquarium of the Pacific officials said in a June 30 news release. Harpo, a California sea lion that arrived at the aquarium in Long Beach at 1 year old in 2007, started experiencing symptoms of movement issues, lethargy and decreased appetite in May, officials said. Zoo officials said the following about Harpo’s condition. “Despite extensive tests to determine what was causing Harpo symptoms, test results had been within normal ranges and had not revealed further information about the cause of his symptoms. In the coming days, the Aquarium’s veterinary team and outside veterinary specialists will conduct a necropsy exam to try and determine a cause.”

Four lion cubs die within a week inside Etawah Safari Park in UP

Lioness Sona gave birth to five cubs last week. While the first birth took place on July 6, three others were born on July 9, and the fifth one on July 10. According to the Etawah Safari authorities, who kept the death of the lion cubs a closely guarded secret initially, out of five cubs born, three had died by July 10. While two cubs were stillborn and one was very weak and could not survive. The fourth one, which had taken birth along with two others on July 9, died on Thursday and now the vets were monitoring the condition of the only surviving cub. At around 8.30 am on Thursday, the condition of the fourth cub started deteriorating. There was swelling in its stomach and the cub had difficulty in breathing too. Lioness Sona is also under medical observation and has gradually started eating meals. She had not been eating since her delivery. “Breathing issue is stated to be the primary cause of death. A post-mortem examination will reveal further details,” said officials.
