It is problematic for Americans to criticize Israel for removing the Palestinians from Palestine and stealing their land when our forebears removed the natives of North America and stole their land. The Trail of Tears and other horrific removals raise the question of the truthfulness of the United States as a “shining city on a hill.”
President Reagan’s description of America refers to our ideals, not to our behavior. It is clear that the behavior of the United States does not live up to its ideals. The solution is not to water down or abandon our ideals but to improve our behavior. The problem is the seven deadly sins. The function of education and religious instruction is to constrain the seven deadly sins. The failure to do so unleashes evil and the chaos evil brings. As Christianity grows weaker, evil grows stronger. The CIA by inculcating hate and violence among jihadists is weakening the other great religion that taught the restraint of sin. The influence of ideals depends on their observance. In the United States atheists and Jews weakened Christianity by preventing its public observance. Whether or not they understood, the consequence was a wider opening for evil.
