NCFM on Ritual Baby Boy Genital Mutilation
By NCFM: There are facts about Ritual Male Baby Genital Mutilation aka circumcision — but you won’t be able to learn any of them from Mark Joseph Stern in his article for the National Post (“‘Intactivists’ Against Circumcision,
September 19). Instead you will find an astonishing compilation of
outright falsehoods about thousands of dedicated, unpaid volunteers from
many walks of life who are working to protect children from an
unnecessary and irreversible surgery that many of them grow up to
resent.
Far from dismissing science, individuals committed to protecting
children include leading scientists, pediatricians, public health
researchers, and medical ethicists in countries around the world.
Recently a team of 38 European scientists wrote in Pediatrics that
the only possible medical justification for circumcision is reducing
urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are not only rare for boys, but
can be effectively treated with antibiotics—just as they are for girls.
Even the American Academy of Pediatrics—which has been criticized by these same experts for having a pro-circumcision bias—agrees that medicine does not justify routine circumcision. The Royal Dutch Medical Association found in 2010 that the foreskin is “a complex, erotogenic structure that plays an important role” in sex, concluding that “circumcision of male minors is a violation of children’s rights to autonomy and physical integrity.”

US Deaths from Prescription Drugs Now Exceed Those Related to Street Cocaine and Heroin Combined + US: Veterans Arrested at Vietnam Memorial
By Michael Krieger: A report released yesterday by the non-profit organization Trust for America’s Health has
revealed some startling data on prescription drug abuse in these United
States. The results are pretty damning to the prescription drug
industry. Specifically, it found the majority of total drug related
deaths in the U.S. come from prescription drugs, and they now account
for more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.
More from Trust for America’s Health:
According to the report, prescription drug abuse has quickly become a top public health concern, as the number of drug overdose deaths - a majority of which are from prescription drugs – doubled in 29 states since 1999. The rates quadrupled in four of these states and tripled in 10 more of these states.
Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined, and drug overdose deaths exceed motor vehicle-related deaths in 29 states and Washington, D.C. Misuse and abuse of prescription drugs costs the country an estimated $53.4 billion a year in lost productivity, medical costs and criminal justice costs, and currently only one in 10 Americans with a substance abuse disorder receives treatment.

Get your fiscal house in order: China warns US as Asia expresses concern for $1.3tn of investments
By Ben Chu: China, the biggest foreign creditor of the United States, has waded
into the American budget crisis, warning Congress that it must resolve
the political impasse over the debt ceiling without further delay.
The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Zhu Guangyao, told America’s deadlocked politicians on Monday that “the clock is ticking” and called on them to approve an extension of the national borrowing limit before the federal government is projected to run out of cash on 17 October.
“We ask that the United States earnestly takes steps to resolve in a timely way the political issues around the debt ceiling and prevent a US debt default to ensure the safety of Chinese investments in the United States,” Mr Zhu told reporters in Beijing. “This is the United States’ responsibility,” he added.
The American government entered its seventh day of shutdown on Monday, following the failure of Congress to approve the national budget a week ago.
