By Jonathan Cook: Two legal cases posing globe-spanning threats to our most basic freedoms unfolded separately in Britain and the Netherlands this week. Neither received more than perfunctory coverage in western establishment media like the BBC. 

One was the last-ditch appeal of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in London against efforts by the United States to extradite him so he can be locked away for the rest of his life. 

Assange’s crime, according to the Biden administration, is that he published leaks exposing the systematic war crimes signed off on by the US and British establishments in Iraq and Afghanistan. The British government, perhaps not surprisingly, has assented to his extradition. 

The other case was heard by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Weeks after the World Court judges deemed it plausible that Israel was carrying out genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, the US client state was back in the dock on a separate matter.

ONS Revised Method For Excess Deaths (UK): A Critique – Part 1

By William Collins aka MRA-UK: This is a rapid response to the 20 February 2024 publication by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) of their new estimates of excess deaths in the UK based on a revised methodology. My intention is to run their model(s) independently but this will take a few days so I thought I’d commit some initial thoughts to a post immediately.

This link describes the ONS methodology; while this link is the corresponding dataset; and this link is their R-based code.

Giving public access to their code is unusual. Probably the ONS anticipate being deluged with hard questions from statistically competent people, and this is the best way of addressing such queries – essentially “see for yourself”. This is welcome and sensible. However, I shall use an independent code as any issues might lie within the code itself.

The key issue – which has not escaped public attention already – is that the new methodology estimates far smaller numbers of excess deaths in 2023 (though less so in 2020 and 2021, and actually rather more in 2022). My immediate thoughts as to how this comes about are as follows (bearing in mind that I have done no independent calculations as yet)…

By Susan Abulhawa: It’s 8 pm in Gaza, Palestine right now, the end of my fourth day in Rafah and the first moment I’ve had to sit in a quiet place to reflect.

I’ve tried to take notes, photos, mental images, but this moment is too big for a notepad or my struggling memory. Nothing prepared me for what I would witness.

Before I made it across the Rafah-Egypt border, I read every bit of news coming out of Gaza or about Gaza. I did not look away from any video or image posted from the ground, no matter how gruesome, shocking or traumatizing.

I kept in touch with friends who reported on their situations in the north, middle and south of Gaza – each area suffering in different ways. I stayed current on the latest statistics, the latest political, military and economic maneuverings of Israel, the US and the rest of the world.

I thought I understood the situation on the ground. But I didn’t.
