Authored by Paul Schwennesen: Denmark, according to The New York Times (NYT), is going ahead with its livestock “Burp Tax.” Though hotly contested, the Danish government has nevertheless finally settled on levying farmers 300 kroners (~$43) per ton for carbon dioxide emissions, ramping to $106 per ton by 2035. As is the case with many of these farm-targeted green interventions, the action is ludicrously ineffectual at addressing the trumped-up problem, while remarkably effective at further cementing state controls over economic production.

Part of the reason farms (and especially cows) are such fat targets for this kind of statist intervention is that, politically speaking, they are the perfect scapegoat.

It all seems so harmless, after all—so silly even—that serious-minded folk risk looking ridiculous if they object. Is it really so very draconian, goes the argument, to ask farmers to reduce their cow flatulence? The ever-so-reasonable request (enforceable by law, to be sure) glides under the radar in a scree of giggle-inducing copy that distracts readers to what is really afoot.

The NYT plays its part in this façade, relishing the chance to print “poop, farts, and burps” in the business section so that the regulation seems plucked from an impish children’s story rather than what it is: a deadly serious infringement on economic liberty.

Nevertheless, I find it satisfying when people of statute and importance, such as Putin, come around to my point of view.  For example, in his recent legendary year end press conference and four hour question and answer session, Putin agreed with me that the beneficiary of Syria’s overthrow was Israel.  But Putin again misread the consequences.  He attributed Israel’s occupation of the southern part of what was Syria to Israel’s legitimate security concerns and expressed his hope that Israel would eventually withdraw its forces from Syrian territory. It is nonsensical for Putin to think Israel might withdraw from Greater Israel. The Israeli government has announced its plan to double the Jewish population in the occupied area. “We will continue to hold onto it, cause it to blossom, and settle in it,” announced the Israeli government. It seems that Putin forgot about Greater Israel. Lebanon and Iran are Israel’s next targets. With Syria gone, the road is open.

The same newspaper also labeled him a “moderate Jihadist.” The Washington Post described him as a pragmatic and charismatic leader, while CNN portrayed him as a “blazer-wearing revolutionary.”

Meanwhile, an in-depth portrait from Rolling Stone describes him as a “ruthlessly pragmatic, astute politician who has renounced ‘global jihad’” and intends to “unite Syria.” His “strategic acumen is apparent,” writes Rolling Stone, between paragraphs praising Jolani for leading a successful movement against a dictator.

CNN even scored an exclusive, sit-down interview with Jolani, even as his movement was storming Damascus. When asked by host Jomana Karadsheh about his past actions, he responded by saying, “I believe that everyone in life goes through phases and experiences … As you grow, you learn, and you continue to learn until the very last day of your life,” as if he were discussing embarrassing teenage mistakes, not establishing and leading the Al-Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda’s franchise in Syria.

This is a far cry from the first time CNN covered Jolani.

Germany displayed robust industrial activity, solid productivity, and enviably low unemployment levels, which added to real high wages. However, in the past five years the economy has stagnated, and its GDP is 5% smaller than the pre-pandemic growth trend suggested, according to Bloomberg Economics. Even more worryingly, they estimate that four percentage points of that loss may be permanent.

Most analyses blame the weakness of the German economy on higher energy costs and the Chinese slowdown affecting its exports. However, the reality is more complex.

Germany’s stagnation is self-inflicted.

Germany made its first big mistake in 2012, when its leaders accepted the left-wing diagnosis of the European debt crisis, which blamed all problems on inexistent austerity. Germany embraced inflationism and, in 2014, agreed to the same monetary and interventionist policies that have always destroyed Europe. The German government and the Bundesbank reluctantly agreed to massive ECB monetary expansion and negative nominal rates while allowing the European Commission to abandon its oversight of excessive indebtedness and signing off on back-to-back “stimulus” packages like the Juncker Plan or the Next Generation EU disasters, all of which have left the euro area in stagnation, with more debt and now, inflation.

By Hal Turner: Lt. General Igor Kirillov in charge of Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defense Forces (NBC) of the Russian Army, has been assassinated by an explosion in Moscow.

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, which starts some 7 km (4.35 miles) south-east of the Kremlin.

The explosion was caused by a device hidden inside a scooter, according to the Investigating committee. His assistant was also killed, it said.

The report comes a day after Ukrainian prosecutors charged the general with using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine, according to the Kyiv Post.

Russian media claim that the explosion also ripped out the front door, broke the glass of the residential block, and damaged the general's official car.

That is true, but why is Putin helping Washington succeed?  Putin complains about the growing instability and violence in the Middle East.  Does he realize that he contributed to it by withdrawing Russia’s defense of Syria?  Did Putin forget “seven countries in five years”?  Did Putin forget “Greater Israel”? Did Putin forget Turkey’s ambition against the Kurds?

Putin complains about the West’s participation with Ukraine in the conflict with Russia.  Why did Putin make this possible by dragging out a limited military operation for 3 years?  How could Putin fail to understand that Washington would test the intervention waters step by step to see if there are any real red lines.  The absence of red lines has reached the point of Washington and NATO firing missiles into Russia, and Putin, despite his warnings to the West, retaliates only against Ukraine.  Indeed, Putin’s retaliations are measures that should have been conducted on the first day of Russia’s intervention in Donbas.  Putin has prevented Russian military action that would have made it impossible for Kiev to continue the conflict. What purpose is served by dragging out the conflict? Certainly not the preservation of lives.

By Ekaterina Blinova: The US froze its strategic partnership with Georgia on November 30, after Tbilisi said it was of temporarily suspending EU membership talks.

 

"Georgia being independent of the North Atlantic [Alliance's] structure and the EU political course is disadvantageous to the United States, because America has its own geopolitical goals [in the Caucasus],"

 

Shota Apkhaidze, director of the Caucasus Center for Islamic Studies, told Sputnik.

 

Apkhaidze stressed that the US has invested billions of dollars in Georgia and opposes its detente with Russia, China or Iran. Georgia has been the second largest recipient of US foreign and security aid in Eurasia after Ukraine.

 

The US Congressional Research Service September report revealed that the US has provided more than $6.2 billion in assistance to Georgia since 1992. Georgia has also been designated one of NATO's "closest partners" and an important part of the alliance's Black Sea strategy.

 

But "the leadership of the Georgian Dream actually turned out to be the only government of independent Georgia that entered into a confrontation with the West," the pundit stressed.

 

The US froze its strategic partnership with Georgia on November 30, after Tbilisi said it was of temporarily suspending EU membership talks. The ruling Georgian Dream party's move followed European Parliament attempts to interfere in the nation's affairs by denouncing recent general elections as "unfair" and insisting they be re-run.

 

Ironically, Georgian Dream has never been a "pro-Russian" party and has had clear pro-Western aspirations, Apkhaidze noted.

 

"The Georgian dream was absolutely not going to change its foreign policy vector," he stressed. “They were simply forced by the West – the EU and the US – to take such steps."

Zelensky has pleaded with the West to hand Ukraine at least 25 Patriot batteries, and some European countries have recently donated theirs to Ukrainian forces.

This isn't the first time that Russia has taken out Patriots. Back in October the defense ministry said its forces struck "two Patriot launcher stations made in the US" along with a control station and radar set part of the Patriot defensive network.

UK Government Wants To Ban British Communities From Stopping Wind And Solar

The UK government is going to end communities’ rights to protest against wind and solar power projects, which extends to preventing these projects from being built.

By Irina Slav:Currently, communities can oppose projects through judicial reviews and they can do it repeatedly.

The Starmer government’s proposal is to limit potential opponents of wind and solar installations to just one judicial review per project, a new document published today has suggested.

The document features plans to speed up planning and permitting processes for large wind and solar projects and “streamlining” those processes to make sure that there is nothing to “unduly slow down vital infrastructure development,” the FT quoted from what was probably an earlier version of the document.

The final version published on the UK government’s website does not contain references to community opposition to wind and solar.
