Some would argue that building a backdoor for just one iPhone is a simple, clean-cut solution. But it ignores both the basics of digital security and the significance of what the government is demanding in this case.
In today’s digital world, the “key” to an encrypted system is a piece of information that unlocks the data, and it is only as secure as the protections around it. Once the information is known, or a way to bypass the code is revealed, the encryption can be defeated by anyone with that knowledge.
The government suggests this tool could only be used once, on one phone. But that’s simply not true. Once created, the technique could be used over and over again, on any number of devices. In the physical world, it would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks — from restaurants and banks to stores and homes. No reasonable person would find that acceptable.

The US Economy Has Not Recovered And Will Not Recover

By Paul Craig Roberts: The US economy died when middle class jobs were offshored and when the financial system was deregulated.
Jobs offshoring benefitted corporate executives and shareholders, because lower labor and compliance costs resulted in higher profits. These profits flowed through to shareholders in the form of capital gains and to executives in the form of “performance bonuses.” Wall Street benefitted from the bull market generated by higher profits.
However, jobs offshoring also offshored US GDP and consumer purchasing power. Despite promises of a “New Economy” and better jobs, the replacement jobs have been increasingly part-time, lowly-paid jobs in domestic services, such as retail clerks, waitresses and bartenders.
The offshoring of US manufacturing and professional service jobs to Asia stopped the growth of consumer demand in the US, decimated the middle class, and left insufficient employment for college graduates to be able to service their student loans. The ladders of upward mobility that had made the United States an “opportunity society” were taken down in the interest of higher short-term profits.
Without growth in consumer incomes to drive the economy, the Federal Reserve under Alan Greenspan substituted the growth in consumer debt to take the place of the missing growth in consumer income.

Republicans and Democrats, eager to take advantage of an opening on the Supreme Court, have been quick to advance their ideas about Scalia’s replacement. This is just the beginning of the furor over who gets to appoint the next U.S. Supreme Court justice (President Obama or his successor), when (as soon as Obama chooses or as long as Congress can delay), how (whether by way of a recess appointment or while Congress is in session), and where any judicial nominee will stand on the hot-button political issues of our day (same-sex marriage, Obamacare, immigration, the environment, and abortion).
This is yet another spectacle, not unlike the carnival-like antics of the presidential candidates, to create division, dissension and discord and distract the populace from the nation’s steady march towards totalitarianism.

By Hamza Abu Eltarabesh: Luay Subuh was playing with his baby son Baker when he stopped talking. Luay sat in silence for a moment, then said: “I wish I could see him - even once.”
Luay lost his sight because Israel has used Gaza as a laboratory for “innovative” weapons, as its arm industry likes to boast of its “combat-proven” products.
He was nine years old during Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s attack on Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009.
At one point during that offensive, the people of Beit Lahia felt a sense of relief. It appeared Israel had stopped bombing their town in northern Gaza. As neighbors started venturing outdoors, Luay insisted that he be allowed to play football with his cousins in the yard beside their home.
His mother, Fatma, consented.
But the lull was extremely short. Luay had only been outside for a matter of minutes when the warplanes reappeared. As bombs were dropped around them, he and his cousins screamed and cried.
They did not know where to go or what to do. Shrapnel was whizzing by and Luay started running. A few steps from the gate to his home, he was hit in the face by the fragments of a bomb.
“Everything became dark,” he said.

Gender Pay Gap Explained - Men Work Longer Hours In Tough Jobs

By Belinda Brown: We are having one of our regular drumbeats about the gender pay gap, with the BBC singing the chorus and the liberal media playing the tune.
The reality is that from 20-39 women are paid marginally more than men. By their late 30s the choices which women have made around their children and family start to be reflected in what they are paid for their work. 
We have a wage gap because women prefer shorter hours, flexible and not too demanding employment, and they don’t like to travel far to their work. They are much more likely to work part-time encouraged by the fact that they are paid 5.7 per cent more than men for this. Women choose jobs which they can fit around their families and children. They prefer to work with people, which encourages them into less lucrative sectors of the employment market. Men are happier to work with things.
The idea is that we are paid the same for work of equal value. However equal value is not determined by market forces but by what women consider fair. That men are more likely to relocate or spend longer travelling to work, work outside doing strenuous and frequently hazardous activities, the fact that they work longer hours and do more overtime – none of this seems to be factored in when determining the value of work.
