International Conference on Men's Issues 2020

The International Conference on Men's Issues will be held in Sydney July 31-August 02, 2020. 

About this Event:

ICMI20 is the latest in a series of international conferences that have been held in Detroit, London, Gold Coast and Chicago.

The conference will consist of speech, panel discussions and forums about issues concerning men and boys in today's society.

Speakers include luminaries within the men's rights and wider communities. Speakers will include:

* Paul Elam, founder and principal of the flagship men's rights site A Voice for Men.

* Elizabeth Hobson, Director of Communications at the British political party Justice for Men and Boys.

* Deepika Bhardwaj, maker of the documentary Martyrs of Marriage. Deepika's new collaborative documentary, India's Sons, will be screened at ICMI20.

Dear Editor,

In December 2019, a novel pneumonia caused by a previously unknown pathogen emerged in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people in central China. The initial cases were linked to exposures in a seafood market in Wuhan.¹ As of January 27, 2020, the Chinese authorities reported 2835 confirmed cases in mainland China, including 81 deaths. Additionally, 19 confirmed cases were identified in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 39 imported cases were identified in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, United States, Vietnam, Singapore, Nepal, France, Australia and Canada. The pathogen was soon identified as a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), which is closely related to sever acute respiratory syndrome CoV (SARS-CoV).² Currently, there is no specific treatment against the new virus. Therefore, identifying effective antiviral agents to combat the disease is urgently needed.

Submitted by SouthFront: On Friday a video was shared on social media showing that Turkish security forces used an armored vehicle with a rope to pull down the fence at the Greek border and allow migrants to pass.
The vehicle, according to Greek media is one of the “HIZIR/ATES” type vehicles with daytime and nighttime border surveillance vehicles, which Turkey received from May to August 2019, financed by a program - ironically enough - mostly paid for by the EU.

Chloroquine For The 2019 Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2

By Philippe Colsonab, Jean-Marc Rolainab & Didier Raoultab: A movement to reposition drugs has been initiated in recent years [1]. In this strategy, it is important to use drugs that have been proven to be harmless and whose pharmacokinetics and optimal dosage are well known. In the current episode of novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) emergence [2], we find a spectacular example of possible repositioning of drugs, particularly chloroquine. We had 20 years ago proposed to systematically test chloroquine in viral infections because it had been shown to be effective in vitro against a broad range of viruses [3,4]. This drug has multiple activities, one of which is to alkalise the phagolysosome, which hampers the low-pH-dependent steps of viral replication, including fusion and uncoating [4]. Other mechanisms of antiviral activity are poorly explained [5].

At the time of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-associated coronavirus epidemic [6] in 2003, several molecules were tested to assess their effectiveness against this virus. Among these, teicoplanin [7], an antistaphylococcal agent, had proven efficacy in vitro, and this was also the case for chloroquine, at a 50% effective concentration (EC₅₀) of approximatively 8 µM, and when added to the cell culture either before of after exposure to the virus [5,[8], [9], [10].

Early use of large dose antioxidants, especially vitamin C (VC), therefore, plays a key role in the management of these patients.

At the time of writing, almost 130,000 people have signed, meaning that parliament will now consider holding a debate on the petition.
The petition notes: “We would like the government to at least consider closing schools/colleges down in the coming weeks or as soon as possible, in addition to taking necessary actions to prevent further spread.
“We would like the Government or Parliament to enforce this action due to the growing fear among parents and students that attend school. 
“The ability to focus or concentrate is affected in addition to the growing fears of the Corona-virus. 
“In our view, the government and health officials around the world are more ‘reactive’ rather than ‘proactive’.
