https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjbxC...In this video Laura Linker talks with a man who describes his reaction to the movie "Desert Flower" about FGM survivor Waris Dirie; he easily makes the connection between female and male genital mutilation. Harry Guiremand discusses the dynamics of facing the public as he, Brother K, Laura and her daughter, Dominic Barba, Brett Johnson and Simon ten Kate march on Market Street to the San Francisco Pride Festival.
Once inside the festival Harry and Brother K carried the big banner through security and positioned themselves for good visibility. Many people took pictures. The music blared so loudly from the stage that at times talking was almost impossible. Two women approached Brother K to relate their experiences with seeing baby boys being cut. One woman worked as a nurse for the military and recounted for us how horrific it was during training to witness a baby boy strapped down and cut, she vowed to speak out against it and never assist in such torture and abuse. The memories still horribly vivid for her to recall 28 years later. I very much regret not being able to record her story but the sound from the events stage at that point was overwhelming. I hope this footage gives you a feeling for the event and an idea of some of the work involved in these street demonstrations. Pubic responses are getting more supportive all the time.
