TV18: AfD co-leader Alice Weidel launched a fierce attack on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a heated Bundestag debate, accusing his government of driving Germany towards “national bankruptcy.”
Speaking three days after the AfD’s sweeping victory in Saxony-Anhalt, Weidel said voters had sent Merz a clear message demanding a change in political direction.
“You are driving Germany towards national bankruptcy in record time,” Weidel said, while declaring that Merz’s political time had run out.
Weidel also criticised the government’s migration, energy and Ukraine policies. She called for peace negotiations with Russia and argued that Germany should resume Russian pipeline gas supplies. She further demanded the deportation of people whose asylum applications have been rejected.
The confrontation came as the AfD emerged as the strongest party in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8% of the vote, while Merz’s CDU suffered a major setback. Merz later hit back at the AfD, accusing its “remigration” policy of amounting to ethnic cleansing and rejecting the party’s approach to migration and Russia.
